Central Florida's Dynamic Demographic
by Deanna Brown

To facilitate a better understanding regarding the growing strength and impact of the Hispanic Community in the Central Florida Region, government, business and community leaders learned together about our collective future by exchanging information and ideas at the Hispanic Summit March 2-4, 2005.

The three pieces of Original Research Studies: The Economic Impact of Hispanics in Central Florida; Puerto Ricans in Orlando and Central Florida and the Regional Leadership Survey, a multi-county analysis highlighting the different voter attitudes and trends in the region, provided valuable information to our government, business and civic leaders to make plans for the future and promote cooperation, coordination and collaboration in the region.

The Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce retained Fishkind & Associates, Inc. to quantify the current and future economic contributions, made by the Hispanic community, to the regional economy.  The Hispanic population of Central Florida is growing rapidly.  Some of the findings revealed:

  • As of 2004 the Hispanic population of Central Florida makes up almost 20 percent of the total population.
  • The purchasing power of the Hispanic community has reached $6.9 billion.
  • Hispanic Owned Businesses comprise 25% of the businesses in the Central Florida Region.

Matos-Rodríguez Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños Hunter College, City University of New York Their research revealed:

  • During the 1990s, Florida displaced New Jersey as the second largest concentration of Puerto Ricans in the U.S. mainland (after New York).
  • Three of the top ten metropolitan areas in the United States with Puerto Rican populations (Orlando, Tampa, and Miami) are in Florida.
