Military history began in 1837 on the shore of Lake Monroe. During the three-hour attack by Seminole Indians on February 8 against a U.S. Army camp, Captain Charles Mellon was killed. Thereafter Camp Monroe was named Fort Mellon, and the surrounding village became known as Mellonville.

Keeping the Region Informed

Since its first edition in January 2002, Regional Florida – Connecting our State’s Regions, has kept readers throughout the state abreast of the progress, accomplishments and activities related to myregion.org.

A publication of the Collins Center for Public Policy, Inc., the monthly e-newsletter is dedicated to sharing the most current and in-depth information available regarding regional initiatives across the state. The Collins Center is an independent non-partisan and nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting creative solutions to major private and public issues facing the people of Florida and the nation.

Established in 1988 by Floridians who envisioned the need for an independent entity to find impartial solutions to controversial problems, the Collins Center believes that solving problems and seizing opportunities are best done on a regional basis. With offices in Tallahassee, West Palm Beach, and Miami, staff members are urban planners, architects, attorneys, commercial and residential developers, community builders, political scientists, and business development experts. Plus, the center draws upon the expertise of the best of Florida's legal and business communities, university researchers, and professionals from all levels of government and the community.

On behalf of the myregion.org Leadership Team and staff, our heartfelt thanks go out to the Collins Center for Public Policy for its continued support and our congratulations for leading the way in focusing political, business, and community leaders on examining challenges and opportunities from a regional perspective.
