myregion.org Influential in Forming Coalitions and Building Partnerships

One of the goals of myregion.org is to create a platform for regional leadership and inclusion. As the individual communities begin to better understand the broader context of the issues affecting the region, new programs, events and partnerships have already taken place as the project evolves.

  • At the 2002 Regional Leadership Conference in November, several members of myregion.org's Executive Committee and Leadership Council addressed over 400 community leaders, elected officials, association professionals, organization volunteers and academia from the seven-county region who gathered for three days to analyze and address regional issues. Our regional County Commission Chairs shared “A View from Our Counties” and participants were able to vote electronically on a proposed plan of action from the seven public school superintendents.

  • For the first time ever, the presidents of the University of Florida and the University of Central Florida discussed the future of the State University System and the regional and economic development of Florida before more than 270 regional leaders at a Regional Forum in early October. Participants received an update on myregion.org’s progress and reacted to the twelve emerging Regional Themes.

  • That same month, myregion.org Chairman Joel Hass addressed key government and industry leaders from the space transportation industry at the 7th Annual Cape Canaveral Spaceport (CCS) Symposium, hosted by Executive Committee member Rick Blucker, Director of the Cape Canaveral Spaceport Planning and Customer Service Office of the 45th Space Wing’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. His presentation “Regional Partnerships: Building the Future of Central Florida,” was in perfect concert with the program theme – “Roadmap to the Future.”

  • Brevard County launched an outreach initiative with NASA Kennedy Space Center’s (KSC) Government Relations Office, traveling to each of its seven neighboring counties, presenting KSC as an asset for the entire region and creating new partnerships that will support the future of Florida’s space industry.

  • In September, unprecedented roundtable meetings took place with leaders from the three Water Management Districts, Transportation and Healthcare executives, and regional Developers to discuss their concern about the future of Central Florida and the issues facing these key areas of our region.

  • Raiza Tamayo, myregion.org Executive Committee member along with Leadership Council members Lonnie C. Bell, Orlando L. Evora, and John C. Hitt, and CEO Roundtable member Darrell Kelley have been appointed to Central Florida’s Transportation Commission, to address a range of transportation issues from rail options to land use. Executive Committee member Rita Kane, former Transportation Commission member, was appointed by Governor Bush to the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged.

When The Central Florida SourceBook for Regional Action is presented to the community in July 2003, it will include recommendations and “next steps” that our regional leaders may follow. Once the framework is built, it is our family of communities who will determine how to best use it.

From what we can see, it is clear that myregion.org is not simply a study done by a consultant to be put on a shelf; it will serve as a tool for ongoing action and cooperation throughout our region.
