The myregion.org
initiative not only has developed a new visual language for the community, but
it has also sparked a new way of thinking and speaking about Central Florida’s
future. This small glossary is designed to define some of the most common terms
used in this process:
myregion.org:
A two-year, critical analysis of how Central Florida’s seven counties (Polk,
Lake, Brevard, Volusia, Orange, Osceola and Seminole) interconnect and interrelate
with each other, and how the region is faring in a rapidly changing global marketplace.
The objective is to accurately assess and articulate the region’s multiple
systems and assets, build a regional framework and consensus, and develop new
leadership and regional thinking for the future.
Essential Activity:
A topic or category to be studied for its local, regional and global significance
to the community. The 13 issues being studied and which are the focus of the
Essential Activity Workshops include: Education,
Environment,
History, Transportation,
Infrastructure,
Economy/Workforce,
Development, Tourism,
Demographics/Diversity,
Healthcare, Culture,
Governance and
Public Safety.
Metro & Region:
A large and usually continuous segment of a surface, space, or area in a specified
district or territory, which pertains to the developmental pattern of activities
within 60 miles of the metro core. Central Florida’s seven counties qualify
as a region.
Super Region:
A large and usually continuous segment of a surface, space, or area in a specified
district or territory within 150 miles of the metro core. This large region
is useful to researchers when they are comparing/contrasting the developmental
events from one of the smaller regions to the developmental events that have
already taken place in the larger region. An example of a Super Region would
be the area between Central Florida and South Georgia.
Global:
Activity relating to or involving the entire earth of worldwide characteristics
and their connections/interactions with each other combined within the variety
of metro regions.
Map Guides:
Graphic designs that illustrate and identify in detail the assets and inventory
associated with the operating systems of the seven counties, i.e. transportation,
healthcare services, education, etc. The maps are a tool for comparing trends,
connections and interrelations between the members of the region. The maps will
be used in the analysis segment of the project.
