What A Parade!
by Stacey Crawford, President

Spirit of Mission at Candlelight Parade

What a fantastic year for Candlelight Parade! Despite the light rain it was still mild and we had a near record turnout of floats with 81 entries and approximately 11,000 festive spectators. It was a great atmosphere!

I hope you all enjoyed the Parade as much as I did.  In my capacity, I watched the parade from many different perspectives, enjoying the sights and sounds of what I believe was one of largest and most enjoyable parades to date. Based on feedback that night, and during the past few days, many others felt the same sense of holiday cheer as I.

Ever wonder what it takes to put on a parade? Well, if you’ve ever felt a little anxious preparing a holiday dinner for a dozen guests, try and imagine hosting 10,000 to 15,000 in a dining room over a kilometre long.

With approximately 60 volunteers, some amazing sponsorship, wonderful in-kind contributions and three Chamber of Commerce staff this event takes shape. Behind the scenes all of these individuals are busy doing some very important tasks. Suffice to say there are some key activities that make the parade possible, and for all of you who participated please know that we recognize your very important contribution. I just wish I were able to thank you all personally. I have, however, put in a good word for all of you to Santa!

The Candlelight Parade is one of the most celebrated nighttime events in Western Canada and is organized entirely by volunteers. On the night of the event we receive tremendous support from the RCMP, Mission Search and Rescue, and Public Works Department of the District of Mission. Without these key partners it would be very difficult to have a parade. Their contribution behind the scenes is immeasurable. Thank you to both!

This year also marked a record level of support from our sponsors, to whom we owe the very existence of the parade. Without your community spirit and remarkable financial support we could not afford to host the event. A special thank you to Prospera Credit Union, West Coast Express, Kinsmen Club, Rotary Clubs, The Shops at Mission Hills, Envision Credit Union, Powerhouse at Stave Falls, Mission Raceway Park, Zajac Ranch for Children, Mission Downtown Business Association, Genstar, Mission City Record and Star FM.

The spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the City of Mission. See you at the Candlelight Parade next year!

Thank you and Merry Christmas,
Stacey Crawford
