President’s Message – Meetings are part of the solution, NOT the problem!

As news of the economic crisis continues to dominate the media, more and more focus is being put on corporate “boondoggles” and “junkets”. To those of us in the meetings industry, we know that the vast majority of meetings and events put on by corporations (and associations) serve a specific business purpose and are part of the organizations’ strategic visions and plans. Without these meetings and events, employees are not educated or recognized, new products and services are not introduced, and the overall ability for a business to succeed is impeded. However, in light of the negative press that continues to plague our industry as a whole, many leaders in our industry have joined together to set the record straight for the media and for congress.

A coalition of organizations, including MPI, has come together under the flag of the U.S. Travel Association to create a set of guidelines for acceptable business travel and meeting practices. These guidelines were created specifically for the corporations receiving federal assistance (TARP money), but the suggested business practices described can be applied to any organization looking to enhance transparency and accountability regarding travel, meetings, and events. The guidelines, along with examples of legitimate business purposes for meeting, events, and incentive/recognition travel can be found on the following website: http://www.meetingindustrycrisiscenter.org/tarp.htm

The MPI Rocky Mountain Chapter Board of Directors are coming up with unique and creative ways to bring members together. This past week was no exception, Cas Strouse, CMM, CMP, Meetings and Events Director with CH2MHILL, and Vice President of Professional Development Strategies Group (PDSG) along with Julie Blankinship, President of B Distinct Events, put together a Planner’s Collaboration meeting. This informal 2 hour gathering was for planners only to openly discuss best practices, challenges they are facing, and just to meet and network with other planners.

February’s Leader of the Month is Russ Aagaard with Splash Promotions. Russ went above and beyond and has led with incredible amount of enthusiasm to start the year off right for the 2009-2010 MPIRMC Table Host program.  The “flashy” Table Host badges that select individuals wear at the monthly meetings were his idea to generate awareness of the program. His great attention to detail and creativity were invaluable.  He is an exemplary example of Leader of the Month!  Well done Russ!
