A Senate bill also encourages employers to use independent advice in the discharge of their obligations. The financial services industry needs to assess the real-world impact of these legislative proposals.

    That's right, the screw has turned. The ugly step-child is beginning to kick some butt. If it weren't for monthly contributions from 401Ks and institutions, the ICI would be reporting net redemptions. It's not that mutual funds are so bad, it's more that hedge funds and ETFs are so appealing. Hedge funds promise pure alpha (return) and ETFs provide everything a fund does at half the cost. (I'm telling you what the investor sees.)

    2005 was not a year of momentum-changing events. There were few notable sales, acquisitions or affiliations; no significant scandals; no major new service advances; and no major changes in plan design. What we did see in 2005 was a lot of planning. Companies -- both large and small -- began for the first time in a long time to truly evaluate their businesses and assess their prospects for growth. I'll discuss what this means for 2006.
