Rental Housing Against Higher Taxes, (
www.stoprentalhousingtaxes.com) is a new project of the California Apartment Association (CAA) and is a coalition of rental property owners, managers, and residents throughout California who oppose higher taxes, particularly a Split Roll property tax.
A Split Roll Tax would allow counties to reassess rental and commercial property annually based on its current market value. These properties would not have the protection of California’s Proposition 13 (passed by the voters in 1978), which limits property tax increases based on the initial assessed value. By reassessing residential rental property on an annual basis, a split roll system would cost California rental housing providers billions of dollars a year in new taxes.
All CAA members and all rental properties owners from throughout California should go to
www.stoprentalhousingtaxes.com to learn more about this critical issue facing the rental housing industry. Owners can also calculate what a Split Roll Tax would cost them in new assessed property values by using the site’s Tax Calculator.
