A Fond Farewell
by LVMC Staff
Ann Bull and Elaine Wesley have given a combined total of
over 45 years of service to Literacy Volunteers of Maricopa County. They both went through the tutor training
program and worked one-to-one with several students.
As tutors these ladies had a direct impact on the students
they tutored. They developed curriculum
and lesson plans to help their students achieve results in learning to
read. They assisted these students to
begin their journey on the road to educational gains, more effective involvement
in the lives of their children, employment improvement, and successful
lives. They also, over the years,
offered assistance to new tutors sharing with them their experiences, successes
and failures.
In the early years, LVMC produced fund raising spectaculars
like the Masked Ball and the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Ann and Elaine participated fully in the planning and production
of these events. They also served to
recruit new volunteers and students at various other community events such as
Volunteer Day at Barnes and Noble.
During the 20+ years of their service, Ann and Elaine gave a
lot of administrative support. They
were instrumental in planning, organizing and administering the matching of
students and tutors, keeping accurate and timely records and encouraging tutors
in their endeavors. It wasn’t until
their retirement from this volunteer service in August of this year that we all
truly found out the extent of the service Ann and Elaine had performed. It has been difficult, to say the least, to
replace the work they did for this organization. We know that the decision to leave was difficult for both of them
but they were ready to enjoy some new adventures. They will be sorely missed
and we wish them the best of luck!
