President's Message
by Patricia Szczuka

Patricia Szczuka

Last week I attended Westec for one day.  As I took the escalator up to Kentia Hall, I am sure I had the same reaction as most of you, “Is this it?”  Remember when the show took up the entire Los Angeles Convention Center?  Remember when you could count on spending all day because of the familiar faces you would see and stop to catch up with in the hallways, in the registration lobby, and up and down the aisles?

Sure, there are a multitude of reasons why trade shows, in general, are smaller these days.  One of them being the technology we have today allows us to view products, use them for a trial period, and eventually purchase them, use them and eventually replace them without ever meeting anyone face to face from the vendor...

Learning the Law-Adapting to ADA

This article is one in an ongoing series being published over the course of the year, compliments of Sentry Insurance. The intention is to advise customers and organizational members on important, but generally unknown or misunderstood, business coverage risks or coverage nuances.

Pro-Labor Executive Orders

President Obama continues to alter the labor landscape for federal contractors with the issuance of several executive orders. Each of these orders demonstrates the new administration’s willingness to be “labor friendly” in these difficult times.

Executive Order 13494 provides that federal agencies are not to reimburse federal contractors for costs related to encouraging or discouraging its employees to join unions and bargain collectively. Examples of costs that no longer can be billed to federal departments and agencies, “when they are undertaken to persuade employees to exercise or not to exercise...

Reduce Employee Hours and Maintain Moral
California Work Share Unemployment Insurance Program

The current economic situation is causing many small manufactures tremendous heartache.  They are facing money challenges but don’t want to lay off key employees.  It can be especially tough if we can see a positive change happening in our business in the next few months.

Fortunately, the state of California offers relief.  They call it the California Work Share Unemployment Insurance program and it is the first of its kind in the nation.  Typically, if a business has 100 employees, and they must reduce their workforce by 20%, they will need to lay off 20 people.  Under the Work Share program, an employer can file a Work Share plan with EDD, and then have their employees work a reduced number of hours (of which the difference will be covered by unemployment benefits.)
