John R. Graham wrote an interesting article in the Fall 2009 issue of LINK magazine, the National Magazine for Fastener Distributors, titled “Salespeople Under Siege: The Profession Redefined.”  In summary, he discusses how companies doing more with less and misguided use of a “lowest cost” policy has raised the difficulty of being a salespeople to unprecedented levels. 

In essence Graham believes that many of today’s salespeople “not only can’t get through the door, they can’t get to the door...”

Brenda BakerWhat issues in your business continue to concern you?  What questions do you have that other seasoned shop owners may be able to answer?  Our annual roundtable is the chance to ask those questions and seek advice on the burning issues your shop is facing.  Tuesday, November 17th is the date of our annual Roundtable Discussion.  We will start the evening with networking (5pm), following by dinner, an introduction from our National NTMA Chairman Ron Overton followed by the roundtable discussion, moderated by Glynn Pennington of Penco Precision.  If you have specific issues you want to discuss, please let us know so we can put them on the schedule. We are pleased that NTMA National Chairman Ron Overton will be joining us. Ron is the president of Overton Industries in Mooresville, Indiana.  Overton specializes in metal tubing services, injection mold tooling, carbide tooling, custom stamping, and powdered metal tooling in the Automotive, Consumer Products, Defense, Energy, Heavy Equipment and Safety Industries. Ron will give us a quick overview of doing business in the Auto industry.

Our roundtable discussion will follow. We will survey members for roundtable topics before the meeting and will have an open session for other topics attendees want to discuss. This meeting is a great opportunity to talk to fellow shop owners and learn from their experiences with situations you are facing in your business!

NTMA Training Centers Have Graduates Available!

The NTMA Training Centers in Norwalk and Ontario would like to invite you to interview graduates looking for employment. The Machinist Training graduates complete an intensive 7 month program that includes topics such as algebra, trigonometry, blueprint reading, all conventional machining, to the CNC mills and lathes and an introduction to wire EDM and MasterCam.

Immediate Openings

NTMA Training Centers of Southern California, a private non-profit trust organization with two campuses in the Los Angeles and Inland Empire areas has immediate openings for highly motivated, results-oriented PART-TIME and FULL-TIME Machinist Instructors to work at both our Norwalk, CA and Ontario, CA campuses. 

This is a GREAT opportunity for experienced Machinists to pass on their knowledge to others!  Flexible schedules available as the NTMA Training Centers hold classes from 7am – 11pm Monday thru Friday (multiple classes throughout the day) and 8am-4:30pm on Saturdays.

APPRENTICE COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU
The NTMA Apprenticeship Committee is seeking new members.  The Apprentice Committee works in conjunction with the Training Centers assisting with the details of our already established 2 and 4 year programs, interviewing students and providing the Apprenticeship Banquet held in June.  We are looking for shop owners interested in joining our committee and providing feedback on the program.
