Vice-Chair, IBM Academy of Technology Visits USF
Dr. Jai Menon, Vice-Chair of IBM Academy of Technology
Dr. Jai Menon, Vice-Chair of IBM Academy of Technology and Vice-President of IBM’s Global University Programs, visited USF on October 6, 2009. Invited by the Center for India Studies as part of their on-going lecture series, Dr. Menon spoke on “IBM--A Globally Integrated Enterprise” in the Marshall Center. Focusing on IBM’s global presence, Dr. Menon paid special attention to the company’s operations in India. He explained the various sectors that IBM is involved in and the role that the Indian sub-continent plays geographically and economically.

International Affairs Showcases the “Unstoppable” Confucius Institute
CI faculty member, Dr. Honglu He, plays the Erhu at the launch.
University of South Florida launched the USF: Unstoppable campaign on October 20, 2009. The campaign’s goal is to raise $600 million for academic enhancements, capital, faculty, scholarships and priority needs throughout the entire USF System. The launch featured 22 booths highlighting activities and research from different colleges and departments across campus. International Affairs showcased the Confucius Institute highlighting culture and language.

Longstanding Partnership in Colombia Thrives
Dr. Tapas Das, Associate Provost for Policy Analysis, Planning and Performance
In August 2009, Dr. Tapas Das, Associate Provost for Policy Analysis, Planning and Performance, and Professor in the Department of Industrial & Management Systems Engineering traveled to Colombia where he was a guest speaker at the Universidad del Norte’s US Bilateral Fulbright Commission meeting. Dr. Das gave two presentations at the conference, “Academic Exchange and Dual Degree Programs with USF” and “Globalized Initiatives for Teaching and Research.”
The University of South Florida and the Universidad del Norte have been strategic partners since 1993.

A Winning Fall for USF
Fall 2009 has been a busy and successful semester for students and faculty alike at USF. Both faculty and students earned praise and won awards at some of academia’s most prestigious international events. USF’s School of Architecture and Community Design won international recognition for their designs at the 2008-2009 International Student Design Competition sponsored by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), in association with the National Building Museum.

Stairway to Infosys
“There is a myth out there that Study Abroad is only cultural. But it isn’t; it’s very, very professional.” Director of USF Education Abroad, Amanda Maurer, says that while a good number of Education Abroad programs focus on cultural immersion, an equal number offer students a highly intensive, professional experience. The Education Abroad program to India is an ideal example.
