Aiding Humanity through Knowledge
Dr. Jim Mihelcic and Linda Phillips, Civil and Environmental Engineering, co-authored the “Field Guide to Environmental Engineering for Development Workers” with colleagues from Michigan Tech. The guide focuses on water, sanitation, and indoor air projects and shows engineers how to apply the professional skills they have learned to serve humanity. The guide provides background on planning projects and tips on using available materials. The illustrated guide is based on the work Mihelcic and Phillips have done with the USF Master’s International Program and the International Capstone Design Course. Dr. Mihelcic serves as the Director for the Master's International Program in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Juniper-Poplar Global Living and Learning Community
Juniper-Poplar Residence Hall
The newly completed Juniper-Poplar Hall opened its doors to USF students early in August. A large venue for accommodating students, Juniper-Poplar will assist in USF’s new requirement that all first-time in college students live on campus. In addition, Juniper-Poplar hosts the Global Living and Learning Community (GLLC), a university initiative to help acclimatize new international students to the campus and living in the U.S. The GLLC gives American students the opportunity to interact with students from different countries and learn about their cultures.

Fulbright Scholarships Open Doors
Fulbright scholarships have been awarded to three USF graduate students; Adam Buben, Elizabeth Danforth, and Kelley Cosby Sams. The Fulbright U.S. Student Program, administered through the U.S. Department of State, awards scholarships to U.S. students selected through a national, merit-based competition for study and research abroad. This year’s Fulbright scholars will travel abroad to complete their doctoral dissertations at destinations that have a significant link to their area of study.

The Russian Connection
Education Abroad programs at USF are designed around the idea that students learn more and faster when exposed to their academic concentrations in a real world setting. This is particularly true of language and cultural immersion programs. Among the many immersion programs that USF offers, Russia is one of the newer programs that is becoming increasingly popular. The Education Abroad program to Russia is coordinated with the Russian State University for the Humanities (RSUH), a highly reputed university located in Russia’s capital, Moscow.
