USF Welcomes Center for India Studies
Dr. Gurleen Grewal, Director
The Center for India Studies, a newly established department of International Affairs, began operations in May 2009 under the leadership of Dr. Gurleen Grewal. The Center for India Studies will have a multi-dimensional purpose in fostering exchange between India and the USF community. The Center will engage in activities that will enable the Indo-American and American community in Tampa Bay to understand India better.

Director General of Hanban, China Receives President’s Global Leadership Award
Provost Ralph Wilcox, Madame Xu Lin, President Judy Genshaft
Madame Xu Lin, Director General of the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, received the President’s Global Leadership Award at the USF St. Petersburg graduation ceremony on May 3, 2009.

Confucius Institute Says Goodbye to Founding Member
Dr. Xiaonong Zhang
Dr. Xianong Zhang, Associate Director of the USF Confucius Institute, returned to China on May 10th after having served as a professor and leader at the USF Confucius Institute since January 2008. Visiting from Nankai University, Dr. Zhang taught several courses for the USF CI including Doing Business in China and Chinese Business and Economy.

Japan Outreach Cultivates New Activities
Mr. Mitsuo Ogishima and Mr. Hiroshi Yamaguchi Consulate-General of Japan in Miami
The Japan Outreach Initiative (JOI) at USF conducts and participates in events that promote Japanese language, art and culture to faculty, students, and the Tampa Bay community. JOI Coordinator, Mitsuo Ogishima, works to foster stronger cultural relations and facilitates a better understanding between Japan and the U.S.
Mr. Ogishima works with local organizations and groups giving presentations on Japan and its culture. He has met with many local organizations including; the Optimist Club, local Rotary clubs, and Cub Scout Troops.

Design Engineers Support Rural Development in Latin America
The International Capstone Design Program gives students the opportunity to complete their required engineering capstone design projects in Bolivia and is the first of its kind to be offered at USF. The International Capstone Design Program is a collaboration between the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Office of Education Abroad.
