Ten Thousand Villages And A World Wide Fair Wage
Cynthia L. England, CPA
Public Relations Committee
Founded in 1946 as a non-profit program and a founding member of the International Fair Trade Organization, Ten Thousand Villages is dedicated to the goal that one day all artisans and craft workers in the developing countries of the world will earn a fair wage, will be treated with dignity and respect and will be able to live a life of quality.
With that goal in mind, Ten Thousand Villages purchases from artisans in developing countries who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. The products from those artisans can be found at Ten Thousand Villages retail outlet located in the Rice Village shopping area.
For the past two years, Michael Mahady, CPA, has served as the Treasurer on the board of directors of Ten Thousand Villages Houston. Mike finds a way to carve 60 to 100 hours per year out of his obligations as a tax manager at Melton & Melton L.L.P., growing family obligations, and his duties as the current chair of the Relations with Taxing Authorities Committee of the Houston CPA Society.
