Ethics Course In Kingwood

The Northeast Satellite Group will be sponsoring a TSBPA-approved four-hour Ethics course at The Heritage Center in Kingwood on Monday, June 12 from 1:00 to 4:45 PM.  Plan to stay for the short reception immediately following the class to meet and network with CPAs who live and/or work in the area.

This year-old Satellite is pursuing two active elements as their mission - Local CPE Programs and Humble ISD Involvement.  Could there be a third active element?  Consider volunteering if you have a passion...contact Satellite Group Chair Jacques Faust (281.804.8299) to discuss how you can become involved.

Register online in the CPE & Calendar Section of the Chapter web site.

After TAKS Spring Career Awareness Education Activity

Ronnie Darden, CPA, Senior Internal Auditor, Auditing and Advisory Services for the University of Texas Health Science Center, took time to give back to the community the morning of May 3, and made a presentation at Hartman Middle School on the Accounting Profession. He was very positive about the experience and the students' response. "There were approximately 25 eighth grade students who expressed an interest in becoming a CPA," according to Darden. "We discussed the role of the CPA in today's society and the promising future that the profession offers." Darden showed an AICPA-produced video and was pleased with the interest expressed.  "Thank you for extending me this opportunity to give back to the community."

Mosher Seifert & Co. Hosts Pasadena ISD Field Trip – Ken Seifert graciously opened his office on May 12 to 16 senior students (10 from Rayburn High School and 6 from Pasadena High School) who have taken accounting classes this past year.   Ken hosted a continental breakfast and had representatives of his staff visit with the students about the various aspects of accounting and becoming a Certified Public Accountant.

"Career Day at Jenkins Elementary in Spring [on April 18] - was great!" reported presenter Erika Barragan, CPA, treasurer for R. Stahl, Inc.  "It was well organized, and the teachers and students were very receptive and appreciative. I spent the first few minutes talking about accounting, what it means to be a CPA, and my job. It helps that I love my job and the accounting profession! Then we watched the video (which is great). The kids all watched the video with enthusiasm and we had good discussion at the end of the presentation."  Tara Petsch, coordinator of the Career Day for the third grade students, said, "The kids loved it and enjoyed hearing about your career."  In addition to her presentation, Barragan provided a "Seek 'N Find" word puzzle for the students to work on that included business/accounting related words such as:  add, consultant, IRS, business, count, learn, budget, firm, math, CPA, government, money, computer, and taxes.

Mr. Spartalis visited three of my classes last Thursday to speak about careers in Accounting.  He was informative and spoke on a level the students were comfortable with, answering their questions with aplomb.  I would like to thank your organization for what you do for the students and I hope that we can continue to benefit from your largesse.

Sincerely,

Judith Glasco
