President's Message: Looking To The Future
Jeff D. Harris, CPA
Kathy M. Ploch, CPA
2009-2010 President

It is a privilege to preside as the 81st President of the Houston CPA Society. This honor is further enhanced by serving as the fourth woman President during the Society's past 80 years. Even though I am a relatively "new" CPA, having had my license only ten years, to say that I know all of the women Past Presidents - Sheila Root Farquer (1992-1993), Melissa Frazier (2000-2001) and Deborah Touchy (2001-2002) - is really special. The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy's statistics show that there are more women today receiving their certified public accounting certificates than men. It is also refreshing to see the number of women holding top management positions that have traditionally been held by men.

Speaking of history, in choosing the picture for the cover of the Society's membership handbook for this year, I decided to reflect on the past. In looking at the picture, you see many things that have changed. Now running down the middle of Main Street is the Metrorail. The cars look different, but there are still hundreds of them. Downtown has more parking garages, but the cost isn't 25 cents a day anymore. Our country is currently in an economic turmoil although I do not anticipate it will be as serious as the Great Depression. However, this picture should remind us that Houston has had its ups and downs, but has always pressed forward. I feel very certain our city will continue to do so.

Membership Renewal Due Date: June 1, 2009
You should have already received your Joint Dues Statement for the Texas Society and the Houston CPA Society - either by email or regular mail - carrying a June 1 due date. If you have not received your dues billing, please contact TSCPA directly (800.428.0272). When preparing your remittance, please keep the following in mind:
  1. Voluntary Contributions Are Not Mandatory. Amounts shown are only suggestions and can be changed as you prefer. You are free to omit or amend any of these optional check offs. Simply make note of your changes on the form and enter the amended remittance amount. Please consider the $10 contribution to the Chapter Scholarship/Helping Schools Fund, which supports the Houston CPA Society's CPAs Helping Schools initiative, and helps provide scholarships to deserving area high school students and Accounting Excellence Award recipients from colleges and universities in the Houston area.

  2. Renew Your Membership Promptly. The TSCPA is making it faster and easier to pay your state and local dues than ever before through its secure online dues renewal system at www.tscpa.org.  The easiest way to access the system is to click on the "Pay Dues Online" box on the right side of the homepage under NEWS. You can renew your membership, update your records, print a receipt, or if you prefer, print a statement to be mailed or faxed in with your payment.  Remember…pay your TSCPA and Houston CPA Society dues as soon as possible to avoid multiple billings.

  3. Take This Opportunity To Update Your Database Record. Have you moved? Changed jobs? Retired to raise your children or go fishing? Let us know! Click on the Database Update tag line to email or mail your updates. The TSCPA shares this information with its chapters. Continue to receive valuable information from the Society and TSCPA in a timely manner...update your database information!

  4. Nonpayment Of TSCPA Dues Will Result In Your Being Dropped From Your Local Society's Rolls.  TSCPA bylaws mandate membership in a local chapter. Therefore it follows that Houston CPA Society members must also be members of TSCPA.
Please feel free to contact Houston Membership Coordinator Carol Spencer(713.622.7733 x32; cspencer@houstoncpa.org) at the Society office should you have any questions regarding dues.
