Tip O' the Hellman Hat - VPP clients
A tip o’ the Hellman hat to two of our clients who recently earned VPP status or earned the next level of VPP:

L’Oreal USA, located in Aurora, Colorado, officially advanced from Merit to Star in August, 2009.  This warehousing facility employs 65 people and has exemplary housekeeping and emergency evacuation practices.  L’Oreal’s dedication to continual improvement is evident.*

Nextera Energy Resources, located in Peetz, Colorado, was officially recognized as an OSHA VPP Merit site in August, 2009.  The site employs 24 people who operate and maintain a wind energy production facility with almost 300 turbines.  The site’s fall protection program is outstanding and the daily site safety huddle and stretching programs are also noteworthy.*

President's Corner
by Ryan Hellman

Did life ever present you with a “learning opportunity” that pushed your limits beyond your comfort?  I recently faced such a challenge in the steep terrain by Kit Carson Mountain and Crestone Peak in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Colorado.  On a once- in-a-lifetime hunting trip, I was forced to focus on one step at a time in a high altitude as I hiked over boulders and fallen trees.  I pulled from strength, both inner and outer, that I haven’t called upon in a long time and succeeded in my quest for a Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep!

Safe Gas Cylinder Handling
by Dave Ruddy, Principal EHS Consultant

High-pressure gas cylinders such as oxygen, acetylene, or carbon dioxide cylinders, release a great amount of uncontrolled force if the valve gets broken off.  The release of gas could cause the cylinder to take off like a missile or torpedo and fly many feet into the air or go through a wall or cab of a truck.  Many workers have been seriously injured and killed by gas cylinder accidents.  Here are some tips on how to handle them safely:

The Inspection: Anatomy of OSHA Enforcement- Part Three: The Walkaround Inspection and Employee Interviews
by John Reiter, J.D., Labor Relations Consulting for Management

The Walkaround Inspection of the Workplace
The primary function of the OSHA inspection process is the tour of the workplace conducted by the OSHA inspector (the “CSHO”).   It is during this tour of the premises that the CSHO forms his/her opinion of the safety and health practices of the employer and gathers evidence of whether violations of OSHA safety standards exist.   Consequently, this phase is possibly the most critical phase of the inspection.

What's OSHA Up To?
by John Reiter, J.D., Labor Relations Consulting for Management

On July 28, 2009, President Obama announced the selection of David Michaels as the next Assistant Secretary of Labor to run OSHA.    His nomination must first be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before he can take the reins of OSHA.  By way of background, he currently is a research professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health.

One "Flu" over the Cuckoo's Nest
by Kate Ferris and Leslie Hill DeCoster, EHS Consultants

“Oh no, I have a runny nose.  Is it allergies or have I contracted the swine flu?  Maybe I’m starting to have aches?  My daughter had some of her classmates over for a sleepover, I wonder if one of them has it.  A man coughed next to me on the elevator today; maybe I should start wearing a mask around town.”  These thoughts and chatter are more contagious than the real pandemic.  People everywhere are talking about the H1N1 virus and flu season.
