Safe Driving on Wet Roads
I’m cruisin’ in the rain,
Just cruisin’ in the rain,
What a scary feeling,
I’m flying once again!
That’s right, if you drive your car on wet pavement with the
cruise control on, you may fly your car right off the road. This is called hydroplaning. Using cruise control while driving in the
rain or on ice is extremely dangerous as this can cause wheel-spin and loss of
control of the vehicle.
NEVER USE CRUISE
CONTROL WHILE DRIVING IN THE RAIN OR ON ICE!

President's Corner
by Ryan Hellman

I’m writing to you while working at a client’s site in southern Colorado. This manufacturing facility is not too far
from the Gold Medal fishing waters of the Dolores River where I’m hoping to
spend a few hours wetting a line. The
splendid surroundings, however, contradict the unsafe working conditions inside
this facility and renew my commitment to the services offered by Hellman &
Associates.

Survey Finds Concerns About Economy May Increase Incidence of Home Fires
Fire Prevention Week Survey Shows Nearly Half of Americans Planning to Use Alternative Heating Sources this Winter
http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/survey-finds...
by WASHINGTON, Oct 02, 2008 /PRNewswire-USNewswire via COMTEX
The American Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) today released results of a survey showing the majority (79%) of Americans are concerned about the rising cost of heating their homes, and many will use an alternative heating source to reduce their bills this winter. The survey identified additional behaviors related to appliance maintenance and cooking that could also present home fire hazards this winter.
"As we head into, what by all accounts is likely to be a very costly heating season, these survey results and Fire Prevention Week provide a critical opportunity for us to remind people about the things they can do to prevent home fires and keep their families safe and warm this winter," said NFPA President James. M. Shannon. "If people use alternative heat sources to reduce energy costs, it is critical they use devices that are new or in good working order, and they turn off units when they go to bed or leave the room."

Spotlight on Dave Ruddy
|
We wish to introduce the newest member of our Hellman &
Associates Team, Dave Ruddy, EHS Principal Consultant.
Dave brings over twenty years’ experience which includes twenty
years (and five days!) serving in the United States Coast Guard. He has a breadth of experience in the
disciplines of safety management, training development and delivery, and
leadership. His experience includes
regulatory requirement applicability and analyses, health and safety compliance
audits, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Standard compliance reviews, and OSHA written
program development. His experience also
includes service as the emergency preparedness supervisor while stationed in Kodiak,
Alaska.
While serving in the U.S. Coast Guard, Dave sailed from the
Artic to the Antarctic on an Icebreaker, served at bases in Alaska, Florida,
Illinois, and northern California. He
and his family finally landed (to our advantage) in the mountains of Colorado
where they built their own log home in Conifer. Dave and his wife have two sons and one daughter – all actively
involved in their church, school, community, and outdoor endeavors!
Dave served as the Safety Manager of a large infrastructure development
company in Colorado and we are fortunate to gain from his construction
expertise. His training method is
energetic, skilled and interactive – his participants agree that his engaging
classes help them pay attention to safety topics! It doesn’t take a long conversation to see that Dave’s passion is
to send people safely home to their families.
A tip o’ the hat to Dave Ruddy!
