Gary Farmer to Keynote Austin Open4Business Conference
Gary Farmer, Chair of Opportunity Austin and President of Heritage Title of Austin, will open the second annual Austin Open4Business Conference at the new Norris Conference Center on November 11. Farmer will address the status of economic development in Central Texas and discuss upcoming issues affecting business throughout Central Texas. Jamie Rhodes, CEO of Perceptive Sciences, Inc., and founder of the Central Texas Angel Network will lead a panel of Angel investors providing valuable information about submitting business plans for potential funding, and conducting a Fast Pitch competition for entrepreneurs.

Austin Gaming Industry Still on the Rise
Chamber staff will attend the Austin Game Developers Conference September 15-17 at the Austin Convention Center. This community-oriented conference features lectures, panels, tutorials and roundtable discussions on topics taught by leading industry experts.

The Austin gaming industry, though reported to the contrary, is actually on the rise. In 2006 TXP, Inc. found that the gaming and digital media industries employed close to 1,116 people, while in 2008 Chamber research has shown an increase to 2,965 employees across 72 varied companies.

Third Annual Biofuels Conference in Austin September 17-18
The 3rd Annual Texas Biofuels Conference & Expo will take an in-depth look at the agricultural and technical developments impacting the renewable fuels industry in Texas, as well as legislative activity heading into 2009 Legislative Session. UT's Cockrell School of Engineering Gets New Dean
Gregory Fenves, a specialist in structural engineering and former chairman of the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California at Berkeley, has been appointed Dean of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Fenves' appointment, which follows an international search, went into effect on September 1. Fenves replaced Dr. Ben Streetman.

Two chemical engineering professors from UT Austin have been recognized by President George W. Bush as 2007 National Medal of Technology and Innovation laureates, the nation's highest honor for technological achievement. Professors Adam Heller and Grant Willson were among eight national recipients announced this week. Click here for full news release.
