New Boards Announced for NWBC and SABC

The Northwest (NWBC) and South Austin (SABC) Business Councils have announced new leadership for 2009. Area Business Councils provide a channel for their members to get involved in solving problems, discussing issues and learning about special projects and events for those areas. The Councils offer members a unique opportunity to bring a focus to the business needs of the area, and to take community leadership roles in addressing these needs.

Our monthly Economic Indicators report usually presents a ranking of the top 50 metros by rate of total nonfarm job growth over the preceding 12 months. The ranking in the table below varies from that by focusing on the private sector portion of job growth and expands the ranking to the 100 largest metros (inspired by a ranking presented in the Austin Business Journal last week).

Grow Your Business through Referrals

The Chamber is gearing up to begin another round of the popular Business by Referrals series starting January 14. This group meets every other Wednesday over lunch for three months (six sessions total) in the Chamber boardroom, and it incorporates educational tools to help professionals meet their sales goals. Space is limited to five companies per industry and one representative per company. This series always sells out and we will stop taking registrations after the first 60 attendees. The Chamber's weekly electronic newsletter, @theChamber, will have a new look in 2009, thanks to email marketing and communications service Emma. This great newsletter will contain the same important Chamber news and information readers have come to expect with a fresh new look. The biggest change comes in the Member News section where members can now submit a photo or logo with their news article and have their headline appear on the front page! If you have not yet taken advantage of this free member benefit tune in next week to see what you've been missing out on. If you regularly submit items for publication in @theChamber, please take a moment to review the new guidelines for submissions, as there are some significant changes. There is now a 200 word maximum and only the first 10 Member News submissions will be published each week. Read the complete new guidelines here.

Chamber Kicks Off 2009 Legislative Session

The Chamber's first State Issues Committee meeting of 2009, open to Chamber members only, will be held Tuesday, January 13 at 3:30 p.m. in the Chamber Board Room. The committee is comprised of Chamber member volunteers and will discuss three major areas of focus in the 2009 Legislative Agenda: transportation, economic development and education.

Specific issues to be addressed include authority for local jurisdictions to increase funding options for transportation, continued funding for the Texas Enterprise Fund and the Emerging Technology Fund, as well as initiatives to improve teacher availability and quality and to improve students' college or workplace readiness and postsecondary enrollment.

The Austin Chamber of Commerce and its Small Business Steering Committee is holding an open call for professional speakers, trainers and facilitators for the Austin Chamber's small business programs including the Building Blocks of Business Series. This series is a collection of interactive, learning opportunities designed to assist business owners, managers and executives be successful in the world of commerce.
