Business Guide to Partnering with NGOs and the UN
Today, a majority of Global Compact participants report that they are engaged in partnerships with NGOs and UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes. As companies face the complex challenges of operating in new markets, while simultaneously minimizing risk and developing high impact CSR programs, they are increasingly drawing upon the skills, knowledge and experience of NGO and UN partners. In response to the growing demand for guidance on this topic, the Global Compact joined forces with Dalberg Global Development Advisors to produce the first market-based assessment of the partnering capacity of NGOs and UN entities. This "Business Guide to Partnering with NGOs and the United Nations" is based on a survey of approximately 20,000 companies worldwide, and profiles leading NGOs and UN entities both global and local that have demonstrated competency in areas such as advocacy, awareness-raising, health and the environment. The Guide launched in partnership with the Financial Times in July 2007 seeks to enhance the impact of partnerships by increasing transparency, providing easy access to partners, and showcasing successful partnerships. It is an important reference point for anyone seeking to engage in partnerships with NGOs or UN Agencies, Funds or Programmes both to help identify an appropriate partner and as guidance on what to look for in a partnership. For example, because surveyed companies indicated that they value strong accountability and execution skills in NGO and UN partners, the Guide provides detailed assessments of these characteristics for each social actor profiled.
