New Business Update: Alt Heidelberg
Alt Heidelberg, a German restaurant, has opened in the Fern Hill Business District on Park Avenue and South 84th Street.
 
Council approves sale of 15.7 acres to Port of Tacoma for $2.93 million
City Council members approved a resolution July 29 that would sell 15.7 acres of surplus property owned by Tacoma Power to the Port of Tacoma for $2.93 million. If approved, the site at 1300 Taylor Way in the Tacoma Tideflats, which is currently known as a habitat restoration site called the Hylebos Marsh Project, would be developed by the Port of Tacoma. The Port would agree to find a substitute habitat restoration site.
 
City to host Pacific Avenue improvement project open house, Aug. 6
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, the City of Tacoma is hosting an open house to provide details on the upcoming Pacific Avenue improvement project and the impact it will have on the immediate area. The project team will share the schedule and phasing for the project and will discuss the scope of work, which will run on Pacific Avenue between South 17th and South 25th streets and South 25th Street from Pacific Avenue to C Street. National Night Out unites Tacoma neighbors against crime
The 25th annual National Night Out, a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, will take place on Aug.5, and several of Tacoma’s neighborhood groups will participate.

The National Night Out campaign involves citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 35 million people participated in National Night Out 2007.

National Night Out is designed to:
• Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
• Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
• Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
• Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

The City of Tacoma encourages you to participate in any of these local National Night Out celebrations to help make our neighborhoods safe and clean.
 

Metro Parks Tacoma seeks community input to prioritize the future of parks and recreation system
Metro Parks Tacoma will host community meetings to hear what's most important to you in Tacoma’s parks and recreation system and to help set the priorities for the future.

The sessions below will feature interactive opinion polling, and will take place at Foss High School, 2112 S. Tyler:

• Aug. 12: noon to1 p.m., 5 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m.
• Aug. 13: 5 to 6 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m.

Showcase Tacoma colors up the downtown
Don’t miss Showcase Tacoma, a multi-disciplinary arts experience takes place in the heart of downtown Tacoma on Aug. 8 and 9. This third annual event will feature the exploding local and regional arts scene, including visual and performing art exhibits and demonstrations, art installations, and performance activities for people of all ages.
