Los Angeles investors take a stake in downtown Tacoma
Cardinal Equities of Los Angeles met with representatives of the Community and Economic Development’s Private Capital Division to explore redevelopment opportunities for a building they’ve purchased at 1126 Pacific Ave., just north of the South Park garage being redeveloped by the City of Tacoma. Cardinal has identified several uses for the building, including a pharmacy.
 
D Street Overpass receives Vision 2020 Award
The City of Tacoma’s D Street Overpass, a $24.5 million construction project that separates train and motor vehicle traffic by raising the roadway over the railroad tracks, will receive a Puget Sound Regional Council VISION 2020 Award. This project is being honored as an exceptional effort that promotes a livable region and exemplifies VISION 2020, the region’s growth management, economic, and transportation strategy. This award will be presented at the PSRC’s general assembly dinner on April 24 in Seattle.

Design for Center for Urban Waters 60 percent complete
The City of Tacoma’s Center for Urban Waters project is well under way with the development of construction plans and requests for qualifications from contractors. The new facility will be located on the east side of the Thea Foss Waterway and will house the City's Environmental Services Division labs and offices, University of Washington Tacoma research labs, and an office for the Puget Sound Partnership. Modified plans for Heidelberg Hotel under review
The Community and Economic Development Department is continuing to work with the Heidelberg Hotel owners who have modified their original plans for a suburban hotel in downtown. These hotel plans call for over 150 rooms, with design plans that must be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.
 
Workshop on doing business with Indian tribes takes place next week
A free workshop that will explain how to do business with tribes and tribal members will happen from 9 a.m. to noon on March 25 at the Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave. Topics will include taxation and economic development, shared jurisdiction, treaties, Indian law, and the 1989 Centennial Accord. This session is being offered by the Governor’s Office of Indian Affairs, the Department of Revenue and the Association of Washington Business. Private Capital Division welcomes new team member
Debbie Bingham has joined the Community and Economic Development Department and will be responsible for the City of Tacoma’s Federally-designated Renewal Community. The RC designation provides $12 million dollars in tax credits for eligible projects, and provides wage credits for those both working and living within the Renewal Community. Jazz of Tacoma hoops it up in the City of Destiny
Jazz of Tacoma, the city’s very own International Basketball League team, will host the U.S.A. All Stars at 5 p.m. on March 30 at Mount Tahoma High School, 4634 S. 74th St. For more information, visit the Jazz of Tacoma Web site.
