The Travel Channel’s popular show, Made in America, will feature an upcoming segment on Tacoma’s very own Bridge of Glass. The Made in America crew, featuring host John Ratzenberger, interviewed Mayor Bill Baarsma and artist Dale Chihuly for the segment that will appear in the coming months. Two lanes of traffic open on the D Street Overpass
Two lanes of traffic, one going north and one going south, have opened on the D Street Overpass, located at the intersection of D Street and Puyallup Avenue. These two lanes are for vehicles only, and there will be no pedestrian access at this time. For more information, visit the City of Tacoma news release.
 
Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Jan. 21
Tacomans can celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream on Jan. 21 at the 20th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration. Music, dance and dramatic performances will help Tacoma celebrate between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome Exhibition Hall, 2727 E. D St.

Event goers can start their day with a complimentary continental breakfast at 10:30 a.m. and then enjoy multicultural music and dancing. This year’s theme is “Women of the Movement: Give Them a Standing Ovation” and speakers at the event include Rev. Leslie Braxton of Seattle's Mount Zion Baptist Church, U.S. Representative Adam Smith, Pierce County Executive John Ladenburg and Mayor Bill Baarsma.

Washington State History Museum offers diverse performances for MLK Jr. Day
Let the Martin Luther King Jr. celebration continue on Jan. 21 and head to the Washington State History Museum from 1:30 to 4 p.m., which will feature performances from a diverse array of artists including writer C. Rosalind Bell, local hip-hop group 2012, and children’s gospel choir Voices of Angels. Admission to the museum is free all day. Tacoma Power provides free community workshops on practical home solutions
Tacoma Power is offering the following free workshops, which will take place at the Tacoma Public Utilities Administration Building auditorium, 3628 S. 35th St.:

• Replacement windows: More than cosmetics – 7 to 8:30 p.m., Jan. 17
• Keep warm no matter what your heat source – 10 to 11:30 a.m., Jan. 19
• Year-round comfort with a heat pump – 10 to 11:30 a.m., Feb. 9
• Tacoma Public Utilities: What's in it for you – 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 21
• Weatherizing the early 1900s home – 10 to 11:30 a.m., March 8
• Living green – 7 to 8:30 p.m., March 20
• Solar fun with the sun – 10 to 11:30 a.m., April 12

Tacoma Power is also providing an EnviroHouse tour at 10, 10:45 and 11:30 a.m. on April 19 at the City of Tacoma Landfill, 3510 S. Mullen St.

Tacoma Rainiers hold Rhubarb tryouts
The Tacoma Rainiers are hosting tryouts to become the next Rhubarb the Reindeer. The Rainiers are looking for individuals with energy, creative ideas and athletic ability. The tryouts will be held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 12 at the Tacoma Rainiers administrative offices, 3560 Bridgeport Way W., Suite 3E, University Place, 98466.
