Green Report: Metro Parks Turkey Trot
Metro Parks Tacoma’s annual Nov. 22 Turkey Trot run/walk and kid’s dash has gone green this year and now includes:
• Solar power that will replace electricity for chip timing and sound systems
• 100 percent organic cotton race T-shirts.
• Water to Go, a recycled bottle and filtered water system, that will replace bottled water
• Tacoma Public Utilities and Pierce County Environmental Services employees who will offer ideas for the public on going green.
• A bicycler in the lead of the race as an example of alternate forms of transportation.

Turkey Trot participants are encouraged to go green in their own way. More information on how to do so, in addition to the Turkey Trot registration information, can be found at the Metro Parks Tacoma Web site.

D Street Overpass 85 percent complete
The City of Tacoma’s D Street Overpass project, located on D Street between Puyallup Avenue and Dock Street, is starting to take its final shape, and is 85 percent complete.

The 14 support columns are in place with the bridge deck on top. Half of the soil earth walls have been constructed to meet the elevation of the bridge deck and the roadway surface is beginning to be placed on the southern approach from Puyallup Avenue. Streetscape improvements have occurred along Puyallup Avenue, including new curbs, utilities, asphalt, sidewalks and trees.

For more information about the final stages of this project that will raise the roadway over the railroad tracks and provide a connection between the Dome District and the Thea Foss Waterway, visit the City of Tacoma’s News Release.

Nominate volunteers for the City of Destiny Awards
Take a look around. It won’t be long before you run into someone volunteering their time and energy to make Tacoma a great place to live. Tacoma’s volunteers deserve to be recognized for the changes they make in our community, which is where the City of Destiny Awards come in. These yearly honors promote the importance of community service and recognize individuals and groups who make worthwhile contributions to this city. Take the time to nominate an outstanding volunteer for a City of Destiny Award. Nominations will be accepted through Jan. 21, 2008. For more information, go to www.cityoftacoma.org/destinyawards.
