Museums partner with Nordstrom to host fashion show
The Museum of Glass and the Tacoma Art Museum are partnering to host Hot Shop Runway, a spring fashion show presented by Nordstrom, from 6 to 9 p.m. on March 27. The Hot Shop will be transformed into a runway where stunning models will flaunt a selection of the hottest trends in men’s and women’s fashion from Nordstrom’s spring collection. A glass garden of towering bamboo created by Seattle artist Jean-Pierre Canlis will adorn the venue. Ticket price includes the fashion show plus hors d'oeuvres and cocktails or Italian sodas. City to release Downtown Tacoma Housing Analysis
The Community and Economic Development Department, in partnership with New Home Trends – a data, research and consulting firm – has compiled a Downtown Tacoma Housing Analysis. An overview of the analysis can be found on the Community and Economic Development Department Web site. The full report will be available on the C.E.D. Web site by March 26.

Economic Development Board annual meeting focuses on jobs, investments, quality of life
The Tacoma Pierce County Economic Development Board will hold their annual meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, 1500 Broadway. This year’s topics will include creating new jobs, investment and quality of life in the South Sound. Bill Morton, president of Second Half Strategies will serve as the keynote speaker and is an expert on workforce development and training issues facing businesses and governments large and small. Main Street Conference offers sold-out Tacoma tour
This year’s National Main Street Conference will take place March 25 to 28 in Seattle, but there’s a distinct Tacoma tie to it also. A sold-out crowd of more than 40 conference attendees will visit Tacoma from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 27 for “Tour Tacoma: See the Rebirth in Action.” The tour will include stops at the Dome District, the Theater District and Antique Row, the University of Washington, Tacoma, Hilltop, Stadium, 6th Avenue, Proctor, Ruston Way and it will be led by Kala Dralle from the Community and Economic Development Department. Sixteen artists funded by Tacoma Arts Commission
The Tacoma Arts Commission recently announced funding recommendations to support the contributions of 16 individual artists in Tacoma.
The Tacoma Arts Commission creates this type of financial support through its Tacoma Artists Initiative Program. This program was established in 1999 to assist artists in generating new work and sharing their talent with the public.
Sixteen artists spanning visual, media, literary, performance and interdisciplinary arts were funded at a total of $45,000. They are Carla Barragan, Terese Cuff, Kyle Dillehay, Justin Gorman, Scott Gruber, Chad Hagedorn, Justin Hahn, Janet Marcavage, Kevin Miller, Betty Ragan, Elise Richman Holly Senn, Lucas Smiraldo, Katherine Stricker, Josephine A. Zmolek, and Paul Zmolek.
Their proposed new artwork includes the compilation and reading of a book of poems, a short film to be screened at the Grand Cinema, the creation of a new dance and theater production to be performed at Barefoot Studios, the creation of an outdoor public garden and sculpture, and a series of embossed lithographic prints.

Downtown Merchants Group announces executive board
Patricia Lecy-Davis, owner of Embellish Multi-space Salon has been elected as president of the Downtown Merchants Group. Ken Grassi, owner of Grassi’s Flower and Gifts has been named vice president. Neighborhood Innovative, Make A Splash grants up for grabs
The Community and Economic Development Department's Neighborhood Council Office is continuing to accept applications for the 2007 Small Innovative Grant Program. The application deadline is April 13.
These grants provide matching funds primarily to neighborhood organizations within the Neighborhood Council areas. They will assist and support these organizations in developing and implementing small-scale, neighborhood, self-help and physical improvement projects. Projects must benefit low- to moderate-income neighborhoods or communities; make physical improvements, or remove slum and blighted conditions. Examples include street and street-related improvements, lighting, signage, handicap barrier removals, beautification activities and cleanups. Make A Splash Grant applications will be available on April 16 and are due back by May 18. Through this program, the City of Tacoma awards up to $50,000 each year to people and organizations considering an environmental project within the City limits. City holds Zeit-Bike competition
The City of Tacoma is sponsoring the Zeit- Bike Contest, a celebration of bicycles as a spectacular machine and transportation vehicle.
This is a call for artists to transform a bicycle with sculpture, paint, welding, etc., into an art object. The objective is for the bike to be freshly seen as a transportation marvel.
The Zeit-Bike Contest has been organized in conjunction with other Bike to Work activities in Pierce County scheduled during the month of May. National Bike to Work Week is May 14 to 18, and will be observed in Tacoma-Pierce County.
Zeit-Bikes will be judged on May 9 and the top five contenders will be shown at the Tacoma Art Museum on May 17. The top winner will receive a $200 prize. The second and third place winners will also walk away with prizes that have yet to be determined, but promise to be enviable.

Tacoma Visitor Information Center welcomes visitor number 10,000
The Tacoma Visitor Information Center recently welcomed Jane Lister Reis of Seattle as its 10,000th visitor with a special gift basket. Reis was visiting Tacoma to see glass art and she conveniently won two passes to the Museum of Glass, Tacoma Art Museum and Washington State History Museum, along with a complimentary, one-night stay for two at the Courtyard by Marriott and a gift certificate from Avanti Spa.
The Visitor Information Center has a staff of volunteer information specialists who are professionally trained to answer questions about Tacoma and provide information, brochures, maps and directions. The center is located at 1516 Pacific Ave. and it’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Unique forum provides positive introduction to the law for youth
The eighth annual Youth and Law Community Forum will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 17 at the County-City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave. S. This forum will provide a unique opportunity for youth between the ages of 11 and 16 to gain positive exposure to law enforcement, judges, attorneys and other community role models.
