First phase of Chinese Reconciliation Park to be complete by May
Construction of Tacoma’s Chinese Reconciliation Park is currently in Phase 1. This park is the city’s most visual step to reconcile the 1885 expulsion of Chinese inhabitants, when 600 Chinese residents were forcibly removed. Approximately 30 percent of the park, located on Ruston Way, will be completed by May with elements including:
• Seawall construction and beach cleanup • Grading to shape a dragon mound • Pedestrian paths and a waterfront promenade • Park benches, bike racks and trash receptacles • An intertidal grotto • Landscaping • Interpretive signs • Tableau artwork • Chinese artifacts

Convention Center to host more than 30,000 visitors this quarter
Tacoma’s Convention and Trade Center will bring more than 30,000 visitors to the city center this quarter alone, which includes events like this weekend’s Power Athletics National Cheerleading Championship with 2,500 attendees. This event is open to the public. The best way to stay up-to-date on Convention Center happenings and the type of visitors they’re attracting is by frequenting the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center's new Web site and especially their Event Calendar. New Business Update: Infinite Soups and Taqueria El Antojo now open, Puget Sound Pizza extends its hours
• Infinite Soups, which features 25 soups, has opened at 445 Tacoma Ave. S. They’ll be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and they’ll also be at the downtown Tacoma Farmer’s Market, which runs from May to October. • Taqueria El Antojo has opened at 3801 E. McKinley Ave. featuring fast Mexican food. Their hours of operation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Sunday, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight. • Due to their recent expansion, Puget Sound Pizza is now open until midnight seven days a week, and until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

Gregoire speaks in Tacoma on Washington Learns initiative
Gov. Chris Gregoire will speak on the Washington Learns initiative from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on March 6 in the fourth-floor auditorium at the Tacoma Public Schools Central Administration Building, 601 S. 8th St.
Washington Learns is Gregoire's initiative to examine the state's education system from K-12 to higher education and find ways to improve it. The Washington Learns committee has released "Washington Learns: World-Class, Learner Focused, Seamless Education," the final report of an 18-month comprehensive study of education in Washington.

View Sound Transit’s road and transit package via their public open house
Sound Transit and the Regional Transportation Investment District have kicked off a public outreach effort that includes a public open house from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on March 5 at the Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave. This is a chance for citizens to see the near-final package of road and transit investments that will be placed on the ballot for voter approval in November. The package reflects many years of planning and over two years of public review and comment. Does the draft roads and transit package do a good job of reflecting that input? You be the judge. Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training holds session on the City’s Economic Gardening tools
The Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training will host a session on “How Does the Economic Garden Grow?” from 8:15 to 10:15 a.m. on March 9 at the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce, 950 Pacific Ave., Suite 200. This discussion will feature a presentation by Kala Dralle, Community and Economic Development Department, on the City of Tacoma’s market research tools and the Economic Gardening program. WNET is sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration and provides networking and training sessions on a variety of small business management topics designed for small business owners. WNET also provides opportunities to connect with other business resources for additional training and counseling. Both men and women are invited. The cost for the March 9 session is $25 for those who register before 8 a.m. on March 8 or $35 after. Don’t miss these events: Night Tacoma Danced, Old Town Jazz and Blues Festival
The Tacoma Art Museum’s annual black-tie gala fundraiser, Night Tacoma Danced, will take place from 7 p.m. to midnight on March 3 at the Greater Tacoma Convention and Trade Center, 1500 Broadway. Night Tacoma Danced will feature:
• An art sale by premier Northwest artists • A three course dinner with cocktails • A mini live auction • Live funk and soul music by the award-winning Kim Archer Band

Tacoma's Neighborhood Council Program offers a way for community members to band together to improve their immediate surroundings through partnership with each other and the City.
