Tacoma in the News: La Plaza, Provident and Luzon buildings, Tacoma Rainiers, Executive Council for a Greater Tacoma
We hope you didn’t miss the following articles on Tacoma’s growth and development:
The Puget Sound Business Journal’s most recent edition featured an article on La Plaza North, LLC, a developer that received $50 million in financial backing from Morgan Stanley. According to the article, La Plaza is looking to develop six to eight plazas in Western Washington and Oregon that may include a Latino-oriented grocery store and an open air Hispanic market. Tacoma is described as a preferred location for one of these plazas.
The News Tribune reported that two of our historic buildings will be restored and returned to grandeur: • “New life for Luzon building” • “Downtown Tacoma’s Provident”
Tacoma received significant coverage from local and national media regarding a Nov. 29 press conference announcing that Schlegel Sports and famous singer/songwriter Nick Lachey have taken over ownership of the Tacoma Rainiers.
The Business Examiner, reported that the Executive Council for a Greater Tacoma recently named Tom Luce, district director for U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, as the new executive director for the organization.

Economic Development Committee learns about Cheney Stadium remodel, streetscape improvements, Tacoma Rail junction rebuild
City staff presented information to the City of Tacoma’s Economic Development Committee regarding phase one of a Cheney Stadium remodel that will include improvements to concessions, fencing, signage, Americans with Disabilities Act seating and the creation of a dine-in party deck. This work is slated to begin after Jan. 1. It was also reported that City staff has been working with Tacoma’s Neighborhood Business Districts on a City Council funding allocation for streetscape improvements. The funding will allow the City to meet each of the Business District’s top streetscape priority. Lastly, Tacoma Rail offered information on a potential Blakeslee Junction rebuild in Chehalis that would be funded by the State of Washington to create transportation enhancements and improve the railway connection between Tacoma Rail’s Mountain Division, BNSF Railway, and the Puget Sound and Pacific Railroad.

Clearwire offers service in Tacoma
Clearwire Wireless Broadband recently opened a branch office and launched its services in Tacoma which added approximately 50 employees to Tacoma’s workforce at 2601 S. 35th St. They’ll also be opening three retail outlets here. At their opening event, Clearwire announced its “Clearly Connected Communities Initiative” which will provide portable internet service to community organizations assisting foster care, homeless, and seriously ill children. New Business Update: Masa, Garage
• Masa, a traditional Mexican restaurant, will open Dec. 9 for full-time operation at 2811 6th Ave. • Garage, a new nightclub located at 933 Market St., is hoping to open on Dec. 15.

D Street Overpass completes phase one construction
The City of Tacoma and its contactor, MidMountain, recently completed phase one of the D Street Overpass project which included extensive utility work, soil improvements and the removal of sidewalk and pavement. Phase two will include construction of the first half of the overpass while raising the roadway on Puyallup Avenue to meet the future elevation of the overpass. This project is economically significant because it will provide transportation improvements and unite our Dome District with the Thea Foss Waterway. New book on Tacoma's waterfront now available
Arcadia publishing recently released "Tacoma's Waterfront," authored by Caroline Gallacci and Ron Karabaich. The book features a history of the entire area bordering Commencement Bay and the history of Tacoma overall. Returning Swan Creek salmon greeted by celebration
The third annual Salmon Saturday will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to welcome spawning salmon back to Swan Creek. This event, hosted by the Friends of Swan Creek Watershed, will take place at Swan Creek Park and feature a salmon guide, hikes in the canyon to check out the salmon upstream, tips and tools for salmon-friendly cleaning and gardening, children’s activities, and more. Go to the Pioneer Way Entrance to Swan Creek Park which is located on the south side of Pioneer Way, between River and Waller Roads.
