Broadway streetscape improvements to begin in 2007
City staff members recently offered a presentation to the City Council’s Economic Development Committee on Broadway Avenue area streetscape improvements that will be made possible through a Local Improvement District approved by the Tacoma City Council in April, 2006. An LID provides a way for property owners to get together to pay for street and alley paving, sanitary sewers, street lighting or underground wiring.
These downtown Broadway improvements will include reconstruction, repair and renewal of sidewalks, ornamental street lighting and landscaping and construction of surface water, wastewater and water main utility replacement. With such strong coordination between Tacoma Public Utilities and Public Works, the goal is that City won’t have to dig this section up again for a decade or more. The project will go out to bid in December, 2006. A contractor will be selected and construction is likely to begin in April, 2007. The City will reach out to residents, business and property owners throughout the duration of the project. For more information, go to http://www.cityoftacoma.org/broadwaylid.
