About this edition
This edition of Forward Tacoma is dedicated to downtown Tacoma, with its recent building announcements, the events that are putting more feet on our streets, and the quality of life that our downtown offers. Enjoy!

Winthrop, Elks ownership changes hands
We hope you didn’t miss the exciting news about two of downtown’s flagship, icon buildings, The Winthrop Hotel and The Elks. Go to the News Tribune for the details on each of these deals.

Tacoma welcomes new film festival
The Grand Cinema would like to welcome you to the first annual Tacoma Film Festival, where more than 50 films from all over the world will play from Oct. 6 to 12 at the Grand, the Tacoma Art Museum, University of Washington, Tacoma, and Stadium High School's new performing arts theater. The festivities will also feature an opening ceremony at Tacoma City Ballet (above the Grand) and a closing awards ceremony at the Winthrop’s swanky Crystal Ballroom. For more information, including a schedule of the week of films, go to the Grand Cinema’s Web site.

Tour Tacoma’s downtown dwellings
Tacoma’s downtown skyline is changing daily with a host of unique, chic condominiums and apartments, and this year’s Tour of Urban Living will be your chance to get inside them to be a part of the action. This free, self-guided tour will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 14 and 15 throughout downtown. Tour the urban lifestyle that includes our world-class museum row, fabulous eateries, revitalized waterfront, eclectic shops, and the free Link Light Rail that will get you there. Tour maps will be available the day of the event at our information booth inside the Courtyard By Marriott Hotel. You can also pick up a map in advance through the Community and Economic Development Department, 747 Market Street, 9th Floor.

Block Tie Affair unites downtown residents
This year’s Tour of Urban Living will kick off with an event for current downtown residents, the Block Tie Affair. On Oct. 12, downtown residents will have a chance to mix with one another for the first time ever, celebrating their move to the city center, while enjoying appetizers, entertainment and fun. The downtown residents in attendance will also be given “Downtown Ambassador” buttons to wear during the Tour of Urban Living so they can serve as a resource for questions from potential downtown residents. Sorry, this event is only open to current residents. If you want an invitation to next year’s gathering, move downtown!

UWT greets its first freshmen class
Approximately 190 freshmen joined more than 2,000 juniors, seniors and graduate students at University of Washington, Tacoma, this week. In May 2005, Gov. Christine Gregoire signed into law a bill that allowed UWT to become a four-year institution, and we’re so happy to welcome this first freshmen class to our city and we wish them the best of luck. You can meet some of the incoming freshmen by viewing a series of videos about them, available on UWT’s Web site.

Chamber of Commerce hosts Business Expo, Annual Meeting
The Tacoma Pierce-County Chamber of Commerce is offering “Sweeeet Connections,” at this year’s Business Expo and Annual Meeting downtown in the Convention Center. The Business Expo on Oct. 10 and 11 is the Puget Sound's largest business-to-business trade show, with workshops and more than 150 exhibitors. The Chamber’s Annual Meeting will take place at 7:30 a.m. on Oct. 11 and will feature keynote speaker Richard Karlgaard, publisher of Forbes magazine and author of “Life 2.0: How People Across America Are Transforming Their Lives by Finding the Where of Their Happiness.” For more information on these events, go to the Greater Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce Web site.

Visit the Downtown Merchant’s Group
For year-round involvement in Tacoma’s business community, swing by or join the membership of the Downtown Tacoma Merchant’s Group. These monthly gatherings are an excellent resource for meeting the merchants who are making our downtown thrive, feeling the pulse of city center and networking with fellow downtown supporters. Go to the Downtown Merchant’s Web site for more information.
