5th Latin American and Caribbean Forum on HIV and STIs

21 – 23 November 2009

Lima, Peru

The project "Hotels for Life" (“Hoteles por la Vida”) was launched in February 2009 in the run up to the 5th Latin American and Caribbean Forum on HIV and STIs (FORO). The project aims to raise awareness among the hotel industry in Lima about the importance of HIV prevention strategies and to address HIV-related stigma and discrimination issues in their hotels. The project is funded by UNAIDS and implemented by APROPO, a NGO specialized in HIV in the workplace.

APROPO provides capacity-building training workshops which include a situational analysis, education information on HIV prevention, an overview of the epidemic in Peru, information on how to tackle stigma and discrimination at work, etc.

As of June 2009, 20 workshops have taken place in 14 hotels reaching over 500 hotel employees. The project will reach its peak during the FORO with a campaign which will include the display of AIDS related leaflets and posters and distribution of free condoms in all participating hotels. Hotel staff will also bear a pin with the campaign’s logo.

For more information, please contact Maria Engel, Partnership Adviser, Private Sector Partnerships, Partnerships and External Relations, UNAIDS
