H1N1 Prevention Starts At SUMABLES
As we face the possibility of a wider more extreme H1N1 outbreak, it is difficult to predict how the virus may or may not affect us. However, we know as a nation that the first step in preventing the flu is to be prepared. Regardless of the size or type of your business a bit of planning now can put strategies and products into place that will help protect your business and employees when the 2009 H1N1 flu hits. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend you take the following precautions this flu season:
- When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue and throw the tissue away immediately.
- Wash your hands with soap and water often, and/or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers frequently.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth to reduce the spread of germs.
- Sick individuals should stay home from work or school and avoid contact with others.
- If an employee does become sick while at work, place the employee in a separate room or area until they can go home, away from other workers. If the employee needs to go into or through a common area prior to leaving, he or she should cover coughs/sneezes with a tissue or wear a facemask. Ask the employee to go home as soon as possible. All areas that the sick employee visited during the time leading up to getting sick should be thoroughly disinfected and/or sanitized using approved chemicals and supplies.
Healthy people make healthy companies and healthy companies make healthy profits. Employee illness can reduce a companies performance especially with absenteeism, presenteeism, and lost productivity. In fact health-related lost productive time costs employers $1,685 per employee per year. Depending on the number of employees you have this could be quite substantial. Now consider that by implementing only one part of our total plan you could see a 21% reduction in absenteeism due to illness throughout the year.
