New subscription management tool: The Report Abuse link
People with overloaded email boxes are applauding the advanced spam reporting features that many ISPs, such as AOL, Hotmail, and Yahoo, are providing. The only problem with this is that these features have become an easy out for when people want to unsubscribe to your newsletter. What they don’t realize is when they use this option that a) they are not necessarily removed from a mailing list, and b) the action that they are hoping for (a spam alert or a removal from the list) often doesn’t filter back to the publisher, so you will be unaware of the subscriber’s intentions.
We have answered this problem with our new Abuse Handling feature. This feature adds an additional link at the bottom of every outgoing email message. This link appears under the Unsubscribe link, with the label of "(Report Abuse) and remove me from this list."
Now you, as a publisher, are actively soliciting subscriber feedback and, in turn, you will be able to track the number of abuse complaints you are getting in the reporting system.
The Abuse Handling feature will help you improve your mailing list, increase your successful delivery rates, and ultimately reduce the number of subscribers who may no longer be interested in your newsletter. In addition, you will be able to track your subscriber list as it changes over time and use this feature as one more way of measuring how your overall program is doing.
How the "Report Abuse Link" works:
- When a subscriber clicks this link, a permission survey then appears and the subscriber is asked two questions: Have you previously requested to receive email from this sender? and Have you ever contacted or done business with the person or organization that sent this email?
- Upon completion of this survey, the subscriber is immediately removed from the list.
- If the answer to both survey questions is NO, the subscriber is notified that this abuse report will be investigated. Additionally, an email notification is sent to the newsletter publisher as well as the eNews Builder Abuse Desk.
- All clicks to the "Report Abuse Link" will appear in the Subscriber Removed Report as "Removed by subscriber."
- The data on abuse reports will be available in various reports (including Snapshots, Trends, and Histograms.) Publishers will then be able to see the number of abuse complaints collected by issue, mailing, or day of reporting.
