Why eNewsletters are a non-profits best friend

In today's economy, and in any economy for that matter, communications between organizations and its members is vital. Non-profit membership organizations like Chambers of Commerce, Alumni Associations, and Charities need to communicate with their members, benefactors, etc. more often and with timely call to action messages. It is simply vital to their existence and future success.

Print communications make the delivery of time sensitive information difficult. It is also expensive with the cost of postage going up again soon. You have planning time, layout, approval process, printing and postage costs. And you still don't know if the person the communication was intended for actually received it. While print communications won't disappear any time soon, they can and should be augmented with an aggressive email solution. eNewsletters are a non-profits best friend!

Here's an excerpt from "The Gilbert Email Manifesto" by Michael Gilbert of Nonprofit Online News & the Gilbert Center"

I have been recommending "Three Rules of Email" to help nonprofit organizations develop a genuine Internet strategy and avoid being seduced by their own web presence"

Rule #1: Resources spent on email strategies are more valuable than the same resources spent on web strategies.

Rule #2: A web site built around an email strategy is more valuable than a web site that is built around itself.

Rule #3: Email oriented thinking will yield better strategic thinking overall

One of the best ways to accomplish this is with a monthly eNewsletter. eNewsletters are an economical way to reach your membership on a regular basis with news, information and calls for donations. They can be personalized with the members information so each mailing looks like it was targeted to each member. Reporting is also available so you can track opens, articles viewed, links clicked on, surveys answered, etc.

You'll know who read it, what they read, what links were most viewed! Traditional mail can never do this. Having a compelling story that links to a call for action, whether it's a purchase, donation, or simply linking to your web site to drive member traffic, nothing does it better or more affordably than an eNewsletter.
