How do I add a clickable banner to my Newsletter?
Banners and pictures can be added to the newsletter and turned into clickable elements that lead to any Web address. These banners can be fixed so that they appear in every issue or they can be changeable from one issue to the next.
To create a fixed banner, follow these steps:
A.) Create a new article and upload the banner as the article picture.
- From the Main Menu, click Articles.
- In the article area, click Add New at the bottom.
- In the 'Contribute Your Own' section click Continue to proceed to the Article Entry page.
- Under Issue, select [ALL ISSUES]. This makes the banner appear in all issues and not just the current one.
- In the article Title box type 'Banner ' or some other descriptive text (this will not display on the newsletter).
- Click the Add Image button and follow the instructions to upload the GIF or JPEG file containing the banner from your computer (or from another Web site). When the upload is completed, you will be returned to the Article Entry page.
- In the "Link this article to Web address" box, enter the full Web site address (URL) you want the reader to jump to when this banner is clicked. (Use the http:// prefix.)
- In the Article Position section, choose 'Determine position later'.
- Click Save.
B.) Use the Layout Editor to add a Picture element to the newsletter template.
- From the Main Menu, click the Layout button.
- In the Layout Editor, find the location where you would like the banner to appear and click the small ADD button. Layouts consist of a top header region, one or more columns, and a bottom footer region. You can place new elements before or after any existing element or in any unfilled region.
- On the New Page Element screen, click to select the 'Picture' element on the upper right corner.
- Under the Article Assignment heading of the Picture Properties page, select the article containing the banner (e.g., 'Banner ') from the drop down list.
- From the Link to Page list, select the [WEB ADDRESS] option.
- Make sure the 'Display Picture' box is checked, and set the picture position to 'Top'
- Click Save
To configure a banner that changes from one issue to the next:
A) Create a special Topic area that will be reserved for only banners. Each banner location will require its own Topic area. So if you plan to have two banners, one at the top and one in the left hand column, you would define two topics.
- From the Main Menu, click Topics.
- Add a new topic and give it a name that describes its position in your layout. (e.g., 'Top Banner', 'Left Side Banner', etc.). If you have already defined one or more Topics, click ADD NEW at the bottom of the Topic list. If you have not previously defined a topic, enter the topic name directly into the Topics Quick Start page.
- After the Topic is defined, go back and edit the topic. Under the prompt: 'How do you want to use this Topic Section?' choose 'Hide topic from Topic List, using it only to classify articles.' Then, click Save.
B.) Use the Layout Editor to add a Multiple Article element to the newsletter template.
- From the Main Menu, click the Layout button.
- In the Layout Editor, find the location where you would like the banner to always appear and click the small ADD button. Layouts consist of a top header region, one or more columns, and a bottom footer region. You can place new elements before or after any existing element or in any unfilled region.
- On the New Page Element screen, click to select the 'Multiple Article' element on the upper right corner.
- Under Display Attributes, uncheck all of the boxes (date, title, sub-title, author name, web address).
- From the 'Hyperlink leads to this page' list, select the [ARTICLE'S WEB ADDRESS] option.
- Make sure the 'Display Picture' box is checked, and set the picture position to 'Top'.
- Under Order and Filter, specify that only items rated 10 or above will be shown.
- Under LIMIT TO THIS TOPIC (of the Order and Filter section), select the Topic area that has been reserved for the banners that are to appear at this location.
- Click Save
- Repeat this process for each banner location.
C.) Create a new article, assign it to the appropriate topic, and then upload the banner as the article picture.
- From the Main Menu, click Articles.
- In the article area, click Add New at the bottom.
- In the 'Contribute Your Own' section click Continue to proceed to the Article Entry page.
- Under Topic Section, select the topic to which this banner should be assigned.
