Work Ethic and YOU
by Barry Bailey

Work Ethic and YOU

Every organization has an expected work ethic. It is usually ingrained into the very fabric of the company. The work ethic is usually unwritten but it exists in many activities. You can find it in areas such as how you approach management, or how should you act at parties or meetings, or perhaps what can you speak about and what is forbidden to discuss.

Individuals also have a work ethic and sometimes the companies and ours do not mix! We exit (leave) jobs for various reasons. Sometimes we leave for a better opportunity and sometimes the company may invite us to leave. When a person is invited to leave (fired or laid off) most of the time it is not for poor performance! Often there is a miss-match in expectations, perception or just poor personality match. Oh, the reason might be stated as performance related, but in reality it is often for other factors, some of which was just stated.

One way to stay ahead of your peers and in good graces with management is to understand how the organization evaluates its employees and what the expected conduct is and what is the expected work ethic. Many times employees think it is pure output, but it may be how you act, how you address management, how willing you are to take on additional responsibility, or any combination of the above.

Let us explore the foundation for understanding what a work ethic means in organizations and how the modern work ethic has evolved. Work ethic has shifted a great deal in this decade. Expectations from organizations and also from our fellow employees are shaping how we will work in the future. Some of the questions that are asked about work ethic are:

  • How did it get where it is?
  • How has it changed over the past few decades?
  • How will it change in the near future?
  • How will future changes affect my career and me?
The answers to these questions will help to understand what is needed in order to be successful in the workplace!

Signing off...
I wanted to take a moment of your time and thank everyone who has become a reader, continued as a reader and even some of those who left because you have all helped to improve your chamber newsletter. I actually resigned from my position as Chamber Web Administrator back in March but kept doing the newsletter wearing my other hat “Digital Mirrors” which I have operated with my wife Lisa in the Mountain Area since 2002.
Thank you,
Chris Baker
