Oakhurst Community Center’s Ribfest 2007
Annual Ribfest Helps Support
Oakhurst Community Center

Saturday, July 21st has been chosen as the date for the Oakhurst Community Center’s Ribfest.  The organizing committee wants all citizens of the mountain area to hold this date open for another great evening of dining and entertainment at the annual fundraising event.

Community support for the Center is as old as the Center itself.  The facility was built with mostly donated labor and materials -- and what was not donated was paid for with funds raised at dances, fashion shows and bake sales.  These events were sponsored during the early to mid 1960’s by a group of men and women who could envision a place for town hall meetings and community social and recreational activities.

The women who raised much of the money later organized into the group now known as the Mountain Community Women, which still actively supports the community center.  The men were all members of either the Kiwanis or Lions Clubs, which were the only two service clubs in the area at that time.  Then, as now, a combination of cooperation and healthy rivalry between service organizations was responsible for the accomplishment of many worthwhile activities in the growing mountain community.

The Community Center Main Hall was completed in the summer of 1965 and fulfilled the dreams of the early organizers, becoming the center of most of the area’s civic and social activities.  The Community Center received a major face-lift in the late 1990’s, with addition of new restrooms, paved parking lot, landscaping and many other improvements to the inside and exterior of the buildings.

But as with anything vintage, upkeep is a continuing process.  It was necessary to replace the roofs on both Main Hall and Pavilion buildings during the past year and a new furnace/air conditioner was installed in the Pavilion. The Pavilion kitchen is now in the process of being refurbished and furnaces in the Main Hall will need to be replaced before next winter.

The Community Center depends on the money raised at its annual Ribfest to fund major upkeep and improvements to the facility.  The Community Center attempts to keep its use-fees as low as possible so that the facility is affordable to the many groups and individuals who meet there regularly or schedule special events for family, friends, or organizations.

The Ribfest is the sole fundraiser sponsored by the Center.  And it’s a great bargain for those attending.  In addition to a great ribs prepared by barbecue aficionados from several of the area service clubs (along with appropriate side dishes), there are opportunities for great raffle prizes and auction items.  While enjoying all of this, those attending will be helping to keep the Community Center operating and in good repair.  This is our community’s opportunity to help support the Community Center.

The following community groups and service organizations have representatives on the Community Center’s Board of Directors and will be selling tickets and supporting the Ribfest: Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce,  Sierra Lions Club, Sierra Oakhurst Kiwanis Club,  Mountain Community Women, Sunrise Rotary Club, Sierra Oakhurst Rotary Club, Soroptimist of the Sierra, Elks Club, Service Organization of the Sierra (SOS), and Senior Citizens of Oakhurst.  In addition, there will be community businesses donating raffle and auction items and there will be event sponsors who will be acknowledged in future Ribfest articles and at the event.

Tickets are $20 for adults and may be purchased from any of the listed organizations or at the door on July 21st.  Please contact Colleen Lehigh, event chairman, for additional information or table reservations ( 683-6064).

Signing off...
I wanted to take a moment of your time and thank everyone who has become a reader, continued as a reader and even some of those who left because you have all helped to improve your chamber newsletter. I actually resigned from my position as Chamber Web Administrator back in March but kept doing the newsletter wearing my other hat “Digital Mirrors” which I have operated with my wife Lisa in the Mountain Area since 2002.
Thank you,
Chris Baker
