The attack on small business continues

The attack on small business continues
By Senator Bob Dutton
As a citizen statesman, I've never considered myself a career politician. I had a professional life before I was elected to office and I'll have a professional life after I leave politics.
In my life outside of politics I've signed both the front and back of a paycheck and know firsthand the pressure a business owner faces in operating a successful venture.
A strong business community is the backbone to a vibrant California economy.
That's why since coming to Sacramento in 2002 I have fought hard to keep unneeded taxes, mandates and regulations on businesses from becoming law, derailing the engine that makes California's economy run.
But as sure as the sun is going to come up tomorrow there is always going to be an attack on California business and the 2007 legislative season is no different.
This year the state legislature will consider no less than 25 bills that have been tabbed as “job killer” bills by the California Chamber of Commerce.
Anyone interested in the complete list of “job killer” bills can visit the California Chamber's Web site at www.calchamber.com. A brief overview of some of this year's legislation that will hurt businesses and kill jobs includes:
AB 8 (Nunez) -- A bill that will impose a tax on small business employers to fund universal health care coverage.
SB 48 (Perata) -- This bill is similar to that of Assembly Speaker Nunez and is working its way through the Senate. It also taxes small business to fund universal health care.
AB 504 (Swanson) -- A bill that would force employers to pay employees during a strike.
AB 338 (Coto) -- This is one of several bills introduced that will undermine the workers' compensation reform we passed in 2004 that reduced premiums to virtually all employers throughout the state.
It would increase the number of weeks benefits can be paid and changes the medical treatment guidelines.
When these and other pieces of legislation come up for a vote, I always ask myself “will this hurt the business community?” If the business community is hurt California will not be better off.
I'm hopeful that most of the “job killer” bills currently before the legislature will be defeated before they reach Governor Schwarzenegger's desk for signature.
I'm also hopeful that if any do reach his desk, the governor, as a business owner himself, will use his veto power to protect the business community and the California economy.
I want to encourage every business owner to review the “job killer” list and write a letter to their Senator or Assembly member opposing the bills that matter most to you. Real letters from real business owners have a very real impact on the political process. You can make a difference.
Together we can protect California's economic health and vitality.
State Senator Bob Dutton represets Highland in the California Legistlature. His local office is at 8577 Haven Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga. Phone (909) 466-4180. His Sacramento office is in Room 5094 in the State Capitol. The phone number there is (916) 651-4031.

I actually resigned from my position as Chamber Web Administrator back in March but kept doing the newsletter wearing my other hat “Digital Mirrors” which I have operated with my wife Lisa in the Mountain Area since 2002. Thank you, Chris Baker
