When you support Heart of
Florida United Way, you support people right here in Central Floridapeople
like June Kilpatrick.
June, a single mom, worked
as a data entry clerk for a national department store when her life suddenly
took a turn for the worst. June found herself without a job, struggling
and eventually without a place to live. Poised and articulate, she does
not fit the stereotypical image of a homeless person, and neither does her daughter,
Briana. For help, they turned to the Coalition for the Homeless, a Heart
of Florida United Way member charity. It truly can happen to anyone.
Being around the other residents here shows that it doesnt matter what
your background is, where you come from
, says June. She lived
in the womens shelter, which afforded June a safe place to regroup and
get back on her feet. The shelter provided shelter, day care, meals and
a case manager to help her find employment. Most of the residents
took advantage of job training, recalls June. Today, June is working
for the state and hopes to become a court reporter. She and Briana are
doing better than ever before. In 2001, the Coalition for the Homeless
helped more than 1,400 people.
Last year, thanks to the generosity of people just like you, Heart of Florida
United Way and its family of charities helped more than 450,000 June Kilpatricks
right here in Central Florida. Heart of Florida United Ways annual
fundraising campaign continues through November 22. Get involved and make
