Kirk Gentry, Chairman of the Board of the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce announced to the Board of Directors on Thursday, April 10th that Mike Cully, current President/CEO of the Visalia California Chamber of Commerce would take over the reigns of the Chamber in May. Cully replaces Terry Saverson who retired from the Chamber at the start of the year.

At the April 23rd La Mesa City Council meeting, the council voted by a 4-1 vote (Ruth Sterling being the dissenter) to reject the application for the La Mesa Oktoberfest from the San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce and give the application to the La Mesa Village Merchants Association and the 4 month old La Mesa Chamber of Commerce. The East County Chamber will have no role in the 2008 La Mesa Oktoberfest.

The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce will present Pasta and Politics this year focusing on the 52nd U.S. Congressional race. Candidates to fill the 52nd Congressional seat being vacated by Congressman Duncan Hunter after 28 years, will face off at the Chamber’s Pasta and Politics event on Tuesday, April 29th at the El Cajon Elks Lodge located at 1400 E. Washington Avenue in El Cajon.

The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce’s First Friday Breakfast will begin a month of activities celebrating East County Prosperity. Sponsoring the program is the East County Economic Development Council. The program will highlight the East County Economic Development Council and will feature reports from the mayors and elected officials of La Mesa, El Cajon, Lemon Grove and Santee, and County Supervisor Dianne Jacob.

With a May 22nd date for the 6th Annual San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament “Grip It and Rip It” fast approaching, the opportunity for your company to be recognized as a supporter of all the fun is quickly going away. At press time, only a few hole sponsorships are left to be filled. Sponsorships are still available for the very popular drink carts! Raffle and auction prizes are still needed. The San Diego East County Chamber of Commerce Small Business Resource Center will present a SCORE Seminar on "Legal Issues for Small Business:Contracts, Leases and Employees". The workshop will be held on Wednesday, May 14 from 9 am to 12 noon at the Chamber office located at 201 S. Magnolia in El Cajon. The seminar is the second in a series being presented by Dianne Harmata, Attorney at Law from Harmata & Associates.

The Graduation dinner for the Leadership East County class of 2008 (soon to be the best class), we be held at the Golf Events facility at Barona Resort and Casino on Friday, June 6. The class will receive their diplomas, awards will be presented and a silent auction will be held to support the program.

All of the Chambers of Commerce in East County, plus the San Diego East Visitors' Bureau are joining forces again to sponsor a Business Networking Trade Show on Thursday, May 1 from 5:30 to 8:00 at the Alpine Community Center located at 1830 Alpine Blvd., Alpine. The federal government amended the Family Medical Leave Act on Jan.28 that provides additional leave rights to military personnel and their families. This is a federally required posting and must be posted next to your California and Federal Employment Poster immediately. Failure to post could result in fines and penalties.
