Boys Varsity Soccer Season Update
by Steve Morris

The 2008-2009 edition of the Boys Varsity Soccer team first took the field on December 2nd with a lot to prove. Coming out of a rebuilding season that saw them lose to a juggernaut from Puente High School in last winter’s CIF play-offs, the Eagles had been training and conditioning all fall with new head coach Radames Lafaurie and assistant coach Allofs Lima. Injuries and AWOL football players plagued the pre-season line-up but spirits were high as the team took the trip to Chaminade. And in what would prove the template for their early season contests, Brentwood employed a smothering defense and a lightning attack to shock the traditional powerhouse 1-0…

Varsity Boys Basketball Roundup
by Allan Cutrow & Russ Kussman

EDITOR's NOTE: We have several game reports, beginning with coverage from Allan Cutrow: On January 16 -- the Varsity Boys Basketball Team faced off against Valley Christian. Village Christian raced to an early lead of 24-11 in the first quarter out-rebounding the Eagles and beating them up the floor. The Eagles then settled down and out-scored the visitors in the second quarter with Josh Duckworth and Matt Kussman aggressively going to the basket and Matt Moore giving the Eagles some real force on the boards. At the end of the quarter the score stood at 37-26 and the Eagles were poised to come out in the second half and cut the lead even more…

Are College Recruiting Services Worthwhile?
by John Amneus, Assistant Athletic Director

BWS parents of student athletes sometimes ask the Athletic Department about the validity of for-profit college recruiting services that offer to put high school athletes in front of potential college coaches for a fee. While the types of services vary, most seek to introduce mostly unknown high school athletes to colleges and universities in hopes of securing athletic scholarships. ENN turned to John Amneus, Assistant Athletic Director, for answers. As a former NCAA coach (at the Div. I, Div. III, and Community College levels), and nationally-recruited athlete himself, Amneus has unique insight on this issue, and doesn’t mince words. Here’s what he has to say:

New Frosh Boys B’ball Team Takes to the Court
by Stan Brooks

Following the selection of the Boys Junior Varsity team in late December, Athletic Director Jeaney Garcia announced that, because of the large turnout from the 9th grade class, there would be a Freshman Basketball Team taking the court this year. Because of the late start, the AD's office was only able to cobble together a six game schedule. But the team was fortunate enough to recruit Varsity Basketball Head Coach Steve Wachs and Assistant Coach Rick Foley...

MD Girls Basketball Report
by Peter Schlessel & Aileen Wong

EDITOR'S NOTE: Multi-game reports begin with Peter Schlessel's coverage: Brentwood vs. Marlborough 1/20/09 Summary: The Middle School Girls Basketball team beat a very competitive Marlborough squad, 52-31, to improve its record to 2-0. Leading the way with 19 points each was Drew Cabral (with 8 assists and 6 blocks) and Kennedy Martin (with 12 rebounds). Aja Hoggatt and Gabbe Cuevas added valuable contributions off the bench. The Eagles started slowly, trailing 10 - 2, before rallying for a 22 - 18 lead at half. A very strong fourth quarter put the game out of reach. The rematch was at Marlborough on Tues. Jan. 20th, and it went like this…

by Steve Morris

As the Girls Middle School Red soccer team took the field against the Harvard-Westlake squad on Thursday, December 4th, anxiety rippled the Brentwood sideline. 7th Grade Boys Basketball Splits Close Games
by Mark Blau and Doug Dworsky

Editor’s note: A loss on a late shot, and a buzzer beater win – 7th grade boys basketball is putting on some exciting games! Here’s the scoop: Mark Blau reports: On Jan. 13, the Brentwood 7th Grade Boys Basketball team played the Chaminade Eagles in the Brentwood School Pavilion. Brentwood’s team Captain’s Austin Lee and Colton Forth lead the Eagles team on the floor to begin the 1st quarter. Both teams were playing aggressively from the tipoff. James Crenshaw led the Brentwood defense and had an early shot block to begin the game. Chaminade used a tenacious defensive press which created some early problems for the Brentwood offense.
