Challenging Start for V-Boys B’ball
by Russell S. Kussman
The varsity boys basketball team opened the reason in the Pacific Shores Tournament. Here’s how it went: GAME ONE: This game against host team Mira Costa was Brentwood’s 2008 - 2009 debut, and it took a little while to get going. In the first quarter, against a bigger, stronger home team with a deep bench they quickly fell behind 20 - 6. Although the offense ran well, turnovers and cold shooting made points hard to come by...

V-Boys B’ball Nabs a Win at La Quinta Tourney
by Stan Brooks
Coming off of an 0-4 appearance at the Pacific Shores Tournament in Mira Costa the previous week, the young Varsity basketball squad was still searching for its first victory of the season as they traveled to Westminster to compete in the La Quinta Tournament. These Eagles, which are comprised mostly of juniors who played together on the JV over the past two years, have only one returning senior starter - and only three total. Add in a new Coach and you have a team in transition; learning on the fly, with some growing pains along the way. Led by star shooting guard Josh Duckworth, senior forward Matthew Kussman and junior swingman Simon Brooks, the Eagles finally landed their first win in the third game of the tournament...

More to X-Country than Race Scores
by Randi Gottlieb
Three freshman girls joined the BWS cross-country team this year. A record of their race scores would tell you little about what their experience meant to them, how it contributed to their adjustment to high school -- how it changed their lives. You think I exaggerate? Though I am merely one parent standing on the sidelines cheering for the team, what I observed of Shea Robinson, Alana Snyder and Amanda Scharkss, made me want to write something more than the usual team sport report. This is their inspiring story…

MD Boys Red Soccer in 3-2 Loss
by Marc Rapaport
Brentwood Boys Red Soccer played a very tough Harvard-Westlake team on Friday and dropped a hard fought game 3-2. The Wolverines game out strong, and if not for stellar play from goalie Max Howard, we could have easily trailed by 4 or 5 goals, as many point blank opportunities were turned away by the BWS keeper and the crossbar. With Brentwood trailing 2-0 just before the half, Brennan Castro scored into the lower corner on a perfect penalty kick (resulting from a Wolverine hand ball in the box)…

The girls took a 17 – 2 lead before Immaculate Heart made a game of it. Strong contributions were made by Raven Morgan, Drew Cabral, and Jordan Golshan. The next game is Thursday, January 8th at 3:30 pm in the Pavilion against Marlborough. GO EAGLES!!

7th Boys B-Ball is a Scoring Machine
by Kenneth Hinshaw
With 15
players, the 7th graders found themselves in quite a predicament. It seemed maybe there were too many boys for
only one team, but not quite enough for two teams. Coaches Anthony Ephriam and Juaune Armon told parents the talent
on the team is deep. If two teams were
made each team would be good. If only
one team was made, the team would be very
good. After a discussion, the decision
was made to make one Red team…

The Wing: New Informal Student “Blog” Debuts
by ENN Correspondent
“The Wing" is a new, informal Student Life Center (SLC) web publication that comes out weekly. “Basically, it's an e-mail update compiled by students for our student body/faculty to keep up to date with some of the recent events occurring on campus, including sports and other events,” notes Josh Berger, Brentwood’s Director of Student Life. "We want students to feel empowered writing brief first-person narratives” – similar to how many popular blogs are produced on the Internet. About five students contributed to the initial efforts, and more are expected to join in following exams. Check it out here:

What Athletic Achievement Means
by Jeaney Garcia, Dir. of Athletics
As our winter sports teams are wrapping up pre-season play, it’s a great time to bring up what success looks like within Brentwood School athletics. We evaluate the success of our program, ultimately, by the experience of each and every student-athlete and by the way the athletic program contributes to their development. We find it helpful to focus most specifically on three key program objectives: commitment, achievement, and honor. Here’s what we mean by achievement…
