Home on the Grange -- Jackie Bebenroth

Before Ben won the 2004 Penfolds Creating Excellence Award in the Taste Down Under competition, I was only vaguely familiar with the brand. Fortunately, Ben’s award gave us another reason to buy Penfolds, particularly in preparation for our trip to Australia and I was eager to get to know the wines a little bit better before turning up at Magill Estate.

Now, That's an Australian Beer, Mate!
According to a very funny and clever set of commercials here in the U.S., you’d think that there is only one kind of beer Australians drink. In reality, that particular brand is actually not all that common in Australia and is, by no means, the most popular – not even close.

There's Oil in Them, There Hills!
Bird in Hand Winery and Olive Grove is named after the Bird in Hand gold mine upon which the winery and groves are situated. The gold has run out now, but there’s still some great value in the ground, and treasure that’s worth bottling!

Guten Morgen, Australien!

Our trip back from the Adelaide Hills included a visit in Hahndorf.
This delightful village feels like a little bit like Germany (Prussia actually) transplanted to Australia. The area was settled in 1839 by free settlers (including the Hahn family) from good Prussian Lutheran stock. South Australian’s never tire of telling anyone who will listen that there were no convict settlements in their colony.

The Road Thus Far
In our next Issue we travel to Australia's Northern Territory. First stop - the Alice Springs Camel Cup Leaving Adelaide marks the end of the first half of our trip. From here on out, we leave behind our trusty rental bus and the chill of the Australian winter for the Red Center (Centre in Australian) and the rugged beauty of the Northern Territory.

In our last issue we referred to Koalas as Koala Bears. One observant reader kindly pointed out to us that they are, in fact, not bears, but another wonderful example of Australia's unique marsupial collection. Therefore we amend our statement to note that what was most special about our KOALA sighting was that it was not in a wildlife park or zoo, but a la naturale. Thank you for bearing with us!
