When In...

... Darwin, you definitely have to check out the spots where the locals hang out. We've got two favorites: Pee Wee's on the Point for an excellent gourmet meal done a la Top End and the Darwin Trailer Boat Club, where the view of the sunset is a perfect way to call it a day in Darwin.

A Day on the Billabong

Dr. Antoine Baarnhart picked us up in the predawn Darwin dark on the Sunday morning before Race Day. Our destination was the Corroboree Park for a day of fishing and crocodile avoidance behavior on the Mary billabong.

Dear Diary
Just when I thought Alice would be the love of my life, a young bloke named Darwin stepped in and stole my heart. Darwin has qualities most of us only dream about: easy going, young at heart, a warm free spirit, gorgeous to look at, and a surfer style that always offers something to do.

A Round of Applause
A dream-come-true-trip to Australia may seem like a miracle, but it doesn't happen by magic. It happens because of the hard work and generousity of a lot of people. So here's a round of applause and a special thanks to all those miracle workers who helped make Taste Down Under 2003 a reality.

What's Next

The Taste Down Under team has returned to the U.S.  We bring with us our fill of memories that will last a lifetime and enduring friendships that will last just as long.  Any travel changes you, and this trip to Australia has been no exception.  Adriel speaks eloquently of her growth as a culinarian and as a person.  You can see in her someone more confident in the kitchen and in public speaking, and by her own admission someone who is a little happier with life.  Her only regret is that the competition rules for Taste Down Under stipulate that entrants can only win the first prize once!  She was a marvelous ambassador for Johnson & Wales and we have enjoyed our travels with her a great deal.

On our trip we had the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones, see family and scout for a whole heap of Aussie delicacies that will, with some effort, be turning up in the U.S. (in the not too distant future).  And now our focus is turned to Taste Down Under 2004; bigger and better, new products and some old faithfuls, and definitely more great prizes.

This newsletter will become a regular feature of our efforts, although look for it a little less frequently.  We will continue to bring you news about our work, about those associated with Taste Down Under, and about all things Australian in the U.S.; food, wine, cultural events and opportunities.  Please feel free to drop us a line if you have something "Aussie" going on that you think others will be interested in.

We have enjoyed including you on our 2003 Award trip and look forward to sharing many more Tastes Down Under with you.

Cheers,

David & Barbara
