Looking to Save $$$? Here Are Tips Just for You

photo of a "savings ahead" signEveryone can use help saving money these days. When we asked for tips, your fellow students responded with creative ways to make money go further:

Besides putting $50 per pay period in my credit union account, I also save my $5 bills and deposit them. I have saved from $175 to $245 a month. The money I save in the Christmas club rolls over to my savings in November, so that is another $400 to $500 per year savings.
— TeRica Sampson

When my business started suffering, I began shopping at Salvation Army for me and my family. At first my family was not easy to convince, but as they started to see the brand clothes and the prices that I was buying, they actually started shopping with me. An extra advantage is that our money is used for good causes.

Learn How the New Core Curriculum Affects You

Core Curriculum graphicCome and learn about the new DCCCD Core Curriculum in October and November. Attend a session that will help you to explore the changes in the Core, which takes effect in Fall 2010.

The Core Curriculum is a set of courses designed to address the major skills needed to succeed in college. The Core provides you with a foundation for your college education and can transfer as a block of credit between and among Texas institutions of higher education.

These sessions will help you to make better decisions about transferability, scheduling and career planning.

Chancellor's Office Ombudsman Can Help With Complaints

photo of a conflict eraserEvery DCCCD college has procedures in place for you to pursue complaints or problems. It’s usually easiest for everyone if you address problems informally before they become big distractions. If you can’t resolve problems informally, your college has formal complaint/grievance procedures outlined in district and college publications.

If you have tried to resolve a problem at your college, through both informal and formal channels, and you think that your concern deserves further consideration, then you may ask to be referred to the Chancellor’s Office Ombudsman.

Student Success Story: Sheila Isom-Grace

photo of Sheila Isom-GraceSheila Isom-Grace says she considered herself a “loser.” But after enrolling in the Substance Abuse Counseling program at Eastfield College, she found a career and a purpose in life. Today she is director and 12-Step sponsor of Sigma Twelve Women’s Recovery Center in Brownwood, Texas.

“How did I get to Eastfield’s Substance Abuse program? To be honest, I was in recovery myself. With a year and a half sober at the age of 46, I considered myself a loser who had wasted her life and was looking for a way to make a living that took the least amount of time,” Isom-Grace says.

Her dream was to get her master’s degree, become a licensed professional counselor and open a faith-based treatment center. At her very first class, Substance Abuse Counseling professor Gloria Jackson helped change Isom-Grace’s outlook and set her on the path to success.
