AlterNetRides Makes Ride Sharing Easy

image of two people in a carOne car, one driver, one huge gas bill. If you’re like other students, you’re always on a budget, and gas in your car or money in your pocket are necessities that can collide head-on.

If you need to find another way to school, one that will save gas and reduce your carbon footprint, too, we have a solution for you: AlterNetRides. AlterNetRides is an easy-to-use, online service that links you with other students who would like to carpool to or from campus.

The program gives you a way to link to other students online who are looking for a ride to school. Visit the DCCCD AlterNetRides site, click on the AlterNetRides button, then click on the college you attend and see a list of other students who want to go to and from campus. Then you can check out the general area where they live and decide which alternative is right for you.

Concerned about privacy? AlterNetRides uses a “blind e-mail” technique that protects your privacy.

Get Started With AlterNetRides

image of a carGetting started with AlterNetRides is fast, easy and free. Here’s how:
  1. Go to the DCCCD AlterNetRides site.
  2. Click the AlterNetRides button (be sure your browser doesn’t block pop-up windows from DCCCD.edu or alternetrides.com).
  3. In the pop-up window, select your college’s name.
  4. Click “SignUp” in the upper right corner of the new window.
  5. Read over the Terms & Conditions and click “I Accept.”
  6. In the next window, create your login ID and password. Your login ID must be 3-15 characters, and your password may contain only letters and numbers.
  7. Click Submit and then fill out the next form, including your “Starting Point” and contact information. Your Starting Point is a general area you leave from each day, such as a major cross street near your house.
  8. In the next window you have the option to receive notifications through your cell phone (voice or text) whenever someone shows interest in carpooling with you. If you’d like to receive these notifications, simply check yes and enter the phone number you’d like the notifications sent to. If you’d prefer not to receive these notifications, simply click “Continue.”
That’s it! You’re now a member! You should receive a confirmation e-mail within a few moments.

If you’d like to set up a new commute right away, you can do so with the screens that follow, or you can return to the site later to arrange your new shared commute.
