Career Fairs, Centers Can Open Doors
photo of students
Looking for a job to help pay for school? DCCCD hosts career fairs each semester at locations across the district (the next one is Aug. 27).  DCCCD’s career fairs are open to the public, so if you have friends or family who are job hunting, spread the word!

In addition to sponsoring career fairs, each college Career Center has lots of information about how to dress for interviews, writing cover letters and resumes, networking and much more. And, all DCCCD colleges participate in a computerized job bank that contains full- and part-time job opportunities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Each college offers a variety of services, including:

  • Job listings
  • Individual career counseling
  • Computerized career guidance programs
  • Resume assistance
  • Mock interviewing
  • On-campus recruiting
  • Career resource library
Attend one of the upcoming career fairs. And be sure to check with your college’s Career Center to see what it can do to help you land a job. All services are offered to current and former DCCCD students free of charge.

There's Still Time to Register for Fall

photo of a female studentWant to be sure the classes you want for the Fall semester at your DCCCD college aren’t full? Give yourself the best odds — register as soon as possible.

Registration for the Fall semester is going on now through Sunday, Aug. 23. Credit classes start Monday, Aug. 24.

Register online (if you are eligible — eConnect login required) or on your college campus. (Note: Dates and times for on-campus registration may vary by college; visit your college’s Web site for the most current information.)

Students with an eConnect login can plan their schedules on eConnect, and all students can browse credit classes or search for credit classes using eConnect.

For information about other important Fall term dates, see the 2009-2010 academic calendar.

Have questions? Contact your college’s Admissions/Registrar’s Office.

DCCCD Grad Is Thinking Big
photo of Jennifer Sereno
Still in her 20s, artist Jennifer Sereno’s work will soon be seen by hundreds on a daily basis. She is studio director at an art studio in Plano. She teaches homeowners how to create handmade fireplaces, an endeavor that was profiled in an article published in The Dallas Morning News.

And the Richland College graduate’s biggest design project to date is high-profile: Dallas Area Rapid Transit selected her design for the platform and columns for DART’s Lake Highlands rail station, scheduled to open in 2010; that’s the type of commission that usually goes to older, long-established artists.

Much of the foundation for her success was laid at DCCCD. “I wish Richland was a four-year school,” the May 2009 grad says. “I’d keep going there.”

Join the Fun With a Career in Hospitality Management

photo of a hotel lobbyCan you meet a challenge with enthusiasm when things don’t turn out as planned? Would you like to be part of a professional team where your career advancement and professional growth are limited only by your drive? If so, DCCCD’s Hospitality Management program might be for you.

The hospitality industry and its job openings are expanding so rapidly that the U.S. Department of Labor’s Career Voyages for in-demand occupations has named hospitality one of the nation’s high-growth industries.

North Lake College offers one of the few fully accredited associate degree programs in Hospitality Management in the north Texas area. Our program provides not only industry-specific courses but a complement of skills-related courses so you can meet the challenges of the job with solid training as well as professionalism and good judgment.

Student Success Story: Hetal Suratwala

photo of Hetal SuratwalaHetal Suratwala, a self-described “people person,” found that the Hospitality Management program at North Lake College led to a career that is a perfect fit for her. “I love what I do,” says Suratwala, a group housing coordinator at the Gaylord Texan Hotel. “I am excited to come to work every day because every day is new, and the job is never monotonous.”

Suratwala didn’t enroll at a DCCCD college expecting to find a path to success. “When I first came to the U.S. from India, I was unable to work and therefore wanted to start school to keep myself busy. I had always been interested in hospitality, and I read about the program at North Lake, which was close to my house. I thought the program sounded interesting, but I never realized it would become my career.”

Suratwala quickly found that Hospitality Management was the way to go for her. “My experience in the program was awesome. Arthur James was a great teacher who helped us understand what the hospitality industry is all about. He always kept the lines of communication going and never lost patience with us.”

Send Us Your Money-Saving Tips

photo of a piggy bankIn these tough economic times, everyone can use a few ideas for saving money. And almost everyone has strategies for doing so. Do you ride DART instead of maintaining a car? Do you clip coupons to save cash at the grocery store? Do you cut water bills by planting drought-tolerant plants?

We would like to collect some of your ideas and share them with others at DCCCD.

If you have a money-saving tip for your fellow students, please e-mail them to rrosen@dcccd.edu. We’ll round up the most intriguing and publish them in an upcoming edition of this newsletter.
