This Week in Austin ...

May has arrived – Does this mean the end is near? You might think so, based on all of the antibacterial dispensers set up in the Texas Capitol. (Insert your own joke here…!)

Meeting with Legislative Delegation

On Wednesday, Dr. Lassiter addressed a joint session of the Dallas and Tarrant County legislative delegations, which provided us with an excellent opportunity to highlight the status of DCCCD’s legislative priorities and to remind members about critical upcoming votes.

Proportionality Bill

Speaking of critical votes…Today, the House is scheduled to hear HB 2083 — the proportionality bill. We hear that a favorable amendment which also has the support of the governor’s office will be added. Stay tuned.

Budget

Members of the Conference Committee were named this week. Senate conferees are: Sen. Steve Ogden (R-Bryan), Sen. Florence Shapiro (R-Plano), Sen. Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands), Sen. Royce West (D-Dallas) and Sen. Chuy Hinojosa (D-Mission).

House conferees are: Rep. Jim Pitts (R-Waxahachie), Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Webb), Rep. Ruth Jones-McClendon (D-San Antonio), Rep. John Otto (R-Dayton) and Rep. John Zerwas (R-Houston).

The Conference Committee already has started meeting to lay out the differences between the House and Senate versions of the budget.

Higher Education Committees

On Wednesday, the Senate Higher Education Committee added various bills of interest to DCCCD, including:

  • HB 962 - Related to the purchase of library goods and services by community colleges.
  • SB 145 - Related to the sale by textbook publishers of bundled instructional materials for use by students at public institutions of higher education.
Also on Wednesday, the House Higher Education Committee added several bills of interest to DCCCD, including:

  • HB 3135 – Related to a TEXAS Grant pilot project, which provides incentives for students to attend certain underutilized public institutions of higher education.
  • HB 2612 – Related to salary supplements and enhancements for qualified professional nursing program faculty members at public junior colleges.
