How to Make All As

Study smart, not hard.OK, so we can’t promise you a 4.0 GPA. But what we can offer you are some good ideas for successful studying.

We gathered the following tips from DCCCD’s tutoring centers. If you need help making the grade, keep in mind that all seven DCCCD colleges offer free tutoring services. (Yeah, you read that right – free!) See the end of this article for a list of links to each college’s tutoring Web page.

Good Study Habits = Great Grades

  • If you don’t have one yet, buy a planning calendar. Think about whether it would be more helpful to you to have a notebook-size calendar you can carry in your backpack or a wall calendar you can see at a glance – or maybe even both. Refer to the syllabi for your classes, and note assignment due dates, exam dates and study group meetings. (It’s a good idea to do this as soon as the semester starts if you can.)
  • You may find it helpful to make to-do lists to stay on top of everything you need to get done the next day, during the week or for whatever timeframe makes sense to you ...

Meet Our iTunes Winner

Yuka Matsuura won the iTunes gift card!Earlier this fall, DCCCD asked students to participate in an online survey. We wanted to learn about how our students use media and spend their time to help us with future planning. As a thank you, everyone who participated was entered in a drawing to win a free iPod Nano or a $150 iTunes gift card.

And we have a winner — Yuka Matsuura!

A full-time student at Brookhaven, Yuka is taking Core Curriculum classes and hopes to transfer to SMU to get a bachelor’s degree in biology. Ultimately, she would like to have a career in plastic surgery.

If you’re taking language classes at Brookhaven, you might see Yuka working as a student assistant in the language lab. “I really love my job,” Yuka says.

Yuka plans to use her iTunes gift card to build her collection of J-pop and K-pop (Japanese and Korean popular music) and buy some classical music as well.

“I’m taking a music appreciation class right now, and I’m trying to listen to more classical music,” Yuka says. “That’s one reason I was excited about winning the iTunes gift card.”

Want to Work With Kids?

Take classes in child care and development. If you enjoy being around children, and if you’d like to make a meaningful impact on their lives, check out DCCCD’s Child Development program. Courses in Child Development are useful for anyone who works with or has close association with young children, including teachers and parents.

And the growing demand for quality child care programs means this job field is expected to experience strong growth in the next few years, especially in Texas. Trained professionals are needed in day care centers, federal agencies, public and private schools, churches, hospitals and programs sponsored by business and industry.

The Child Development program, offered by Brookhaven and Eastfield colleges, will give you a foundation of knowledge about children’s development from infancy through adolescence. You’ll then build on that foundation by getting practical experience through cooperative education, either at your work site or our on-campus labs.

Learn more about the Child Development program today at http://www.dcccd.edu/ChildDev and get started making a difference in children’s lives!
